Enh. That's fine for a depth defenceman. Leafs are in trouble if he has to spend too much time in the lineup, though. By the end of the season, it felt pretty clear why he's been bouncing around the league for a bit - good for stretches, but not consistent enough to be a fulltime NHLer.
Stecher's a solid vibes guy. His play undoubtedly fell off as the season wore on but he was also playing almost top-4 minutes for a lot of that, so his role should/could be significantly different this season. Big question now would be how this effects Villeneuve. Is there room for both on the roster as #7/#8 defencemen, or is the plan to maybe rotate them in and out of the #6 spot.
Also while the league minimum is now $850k considering where the cap is I highly doubt we see many players who generally deserve to be on a NHL roster all season long sign for that much. $1-1.25mil is probably the true league minimum for established NHLers now.
Rather develop than give this guy icetime, but if it's 10ish minutes, might as well leave a developing kid out of the NHL to develop. Surely, we can do better, but at this price, who cares?
