Game Notes

TOR
?McElhinney (3-2-0, 2.44 GAA, .925 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?The Leafs played a game last night where everything went great if you ignore the fact that they were shutout, went 0-4 on the powerplay, managed only 6 shots on net in the first half of the game, and had their top line get decimated in possession
?Noted failed crease-clearer Roman Polak is set to play in his 10th straight game this season, unless of course Babcock suddenly remembers that Connor Carrick exists

DET
?Jimmy "Jim" Howard (9-9-6, 2.91 GAA, .906 Sv%) will likely start for the Red Wings
?The Red Wings have exceeded all expectations this year and with a rag-tag group of players led by player-coach Henrik Zetterberg, highly rated prospects Larkin and Mantha, and Olympian Niklas Kronwall, they're making a serious run for a playoff berth
?Haha, just kidding, they suck. They have 1 win in their last 11 games

Injuries

?Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
?Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
?Nikita Soshnikov - "Groin" - "Injured" Reserve
?Auston Matthews - Hand/Concussion/Back - Day to day

Considering how little jump they had last night, I really wouldn't mind seeing Carrick and Kapanen get into the lineup - just to have fresh legs...

I'd like to see Gardiner-Carrick reunited, and put Zaitsev with Borgman. Gardiner-Zaitsev started the season off strong and I had really high hopes that Z was gonna take a step forward but that pairing has had a lot of rough games in the past month.

Agreed. Zaitsev seems to be having a lot of positional issues and is putting his partner in a lot of tough spots. Reminds me of last year, when Zaitsev was paired with Rielly and the two were completely out of whack.

That's my preference as well. I doubt Babcock does it because he doesn't want a rookie with Zaitsev (who he is sort of treating as a development project).

Zaitsev's issues aren't so much positioning issues as they are decision-making issues. He has a good deal of trouble whenever Gardiner or Rielly get creative (communication? Zaitsev's English is fine, so maybe the slang?).

If only we had a left-handed defenceman with 5+ years of North American professional hockey experience somewhere in the organization. You know, like somebody with complimentary skills to Zaitsev (who seems to struggle defending zone entries) and maybe someone who even played with Z last season and put up a 56.1% CF with him in over 100 minutes of ice-time. Hmmmm.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

They let Hunwick walk and now it's come back to bite them squarely in the glutes.  I tried to tell them but noooooooo did they listen?

Babcock actually wanted Hunwick back, but his Hunny left for that extra year on the contract.

The loss last night was tough to watch but at least the Wild are a decent team.

Here's hoping they don't put up another stinking goose egg tonight!
