Game Notes

TOR
-Campbell will likely start for the Leafs
-Speculate away on any line/roster changes we might see beyond the goalie swap. Not many options because of the cap but possible we see Barabanov come out for someone like Robertson, or Lehtonen if they choose to go 7 D

ott
-Matt Murray will likely start for the sens
-If you expect new game notes for a team the Leafs just played you've got another thing coming this season

6-0 Leafs, Campbell with 35 saves.  Chaos ensues in TO media.

I feel like it wouldn't make a difference. Keefe would go back to that sieve Fred next game. For tonight i'd like to see Robertson in for Barabanov, Lehtonen & Sandin for Bogosian / Dermott

Freddie is not a sieve and while he needs to be better, last nighs game isn't on him. Lehtonen and Sandin in for Bogo and Dermott? Can't happen unless both come down sick or injured because both of them need to clear waivers to go on the taxi squad. If the Leafs run with 7D then one of them could go in with Barabanov out.
Leafs will be a different team tonight.

Please this, run with 7D. Let a couple wingers double shift on the 4th line.

Personally I'd like to see Simmonds up with Matthews. I find Joe is struggling to know where M&M are going and he's making some bad passes. I think it's going to take some time for this to gel and we're going to have a few ups and downs in the first few weeks. Hopefully they can get a grip on their own end soon.

Robertson has been moved to the active roster and Barabanov is out. Seeing it isn't an off day I think Robertson will be in tonight. I hope he gets some reps with the top line.

Yeah, why not alternate the two? See if there's some chemistry there, or maybe simply keep the older legs fresh. Keep the opposition on their toes by mixing in the physicality of Simmonds and the playmaking of Thornton. Now's the time.

Barabanov looks so tiny out there, I don't know what he brings to the table honestly. At least Robertson can score and you can put him up in the lineup if need be.

Agree. Simmonds' chaos may do wonders for that line.

I have no issue with Barabanov's game. I think Keefe is easing him into it but playing 5 mins a night on the 4th line isn't helping IMO. I think at one point we'll see both Robertson and Barabanov as regulars in the lineup.

Well game 3 tonight and already the first real test for the Leafs .

Can they flip the switch for the 2nd game of a back-to-back against a weak team that embarrassed them last night.

Barabanov plays with some grit, like Hyman but has absolutely no finish. Roberston will be an upgrade, need Engvall back for the PK.

They tend to do that pretty routinely. The trick this year is understanding that the intensity they show in the bounce back game has to approximate the general level of play required to be a top team.

I'm not on board this whole fire andersen into the sun thing. The goals last night were late tips, and shots in prime scoring areas, with time, in the slot. There might have been one goal he'd like to have back, but you just can't let these chances happen routinely and not expect them to go in now and again. Basically, if you're asking for Andersen to stand on his head to beat the Senators, you're putting too much blame on goaltending.

Second, campbell has never proven that he can be a starter in the NHL, so that seems really more like wishful thinking that a go-to plan.

Third, the best two forwards on the team have no goals. I really doubt that's going to continue for long. And while the Leafs had extended zone time in the Ottawa end, I really didn't see a ton of high danger shot attempts. There was a stretch of almost a minute and a half that the 3rd line played keep away in the ottawa end, which looks great for advanced stats, but I don't think they generated a single scoring opportunity, and that continued with zone entry after zone entry up and down the lineup. Whereas the Ottawa strategy was the take the puck to the net and get good scoring opportunities in the scrum, and it worked pretty well. The leafs have a tendency to overpass at times instead of just getting the puck to the front of the net and crashing it with bodies. They don't all have to be highlight reels, they all count the same. Even Matthews, while he looks like he's skating well, isn't using his size and strength to lean on the D and take the puck to the net. Too much curl and drag.

Anyway, once the lines get corrected, Brodie settles in and they simplify their 5 on 5 play, they'll be fine. If they don't, I'd be squinting hard at the guy behind the bench.

Haha...While I agreed with everything you said, especially regarding Freddie, I lol'd at squinting hard.

Yeah but you should increase the talent wherever you can. What does Barabanov bring that Robertson doesn't? Like I said, people don't want to play him on the third line, so why don't you have him ride shotgun on Tavares' wing from time to time?

Absolutely you should. I hope they use Robertson properly and not how they've used Barabanov so far. For me this isn't about Barabanov vs Robertson. I don't think Barabanov has been given a chance yet to show his talent. I'm still not sold on Vesey but it's early.
I'd like to see Simmonds with Matthews and Robertson with JT.
