TSNBobMcKenzie: When MOU is signed and  legal to sign players, TOR will sign defenceman Mike Mottau to a contract. Also, reported earlier, Cody Franson.

I'm assuming this is AHL depth to replace whoever gets the 7th D spot on the big club.

Maybe, but he does have 300+ games of NHL experience. Maybe he was signed with an eye towards having him as the 7th D.

So Franson/Holzer doesn't make the team? Or is the assumption that Gardiner may not play?

It wouldn't surprise me Franson is trade bait and the team doesn't want Holzer up in the press box if they can avoid it. One of them probably sticks if Gardiner can't make it back before Rielly's 5 games are done (if he gets that chance), but, yeah, I have to believe Mottau is at least in the mix for the #7 spot, considering his experience.

What does it mean when we have a lot of depth defensemen but nothing in the upper water column?  The ocean doesn't work like that.

When you're building a house, first you have to dig out and lay the foundation. Or something like that. I don't know. There's many fish in the sea? There's water at the bottom of the ocean?

I dunno, maybe I was wrong.  I'm picturing Phaneuf as a mighty Bluefin Tuna.

Perhaps, the team's defence is like an onion?

Possibly.  I'm no gourmet though.  If I were in charge, I'd pour a can of mushroom soup over him and lay him out on a bed of noodles.  Simple, but it makes a meal.

Or are we burning down the house?

Well, it's not exactly fine dining, but, as long as it gets the job done . . .
