Lecavalier Bought Out

Didn't think Tampa Bay was willing to spend the money to do it.

I'd be all over him as a 1st line centre for this team.  And all it would cost is money.

Montreal may just hit the jackpot with this buyout.

Plekanec, Desharnais, Eller, Galchenyuk..... Vinny ?  A lot of centres.

The Leafs can be all like, "hey Vinny.. you can step in as the #1 centre at camp. Job is yours. So how's about that vs. getting mired in some goofy mix in Habs land?"

If you're Montreal, you make room for Lecavalier.  Move one of them to the wing.  Use one as trade bait.  Depth down the middle can't prevent you from signing a guy like this.

He'd become one of Montreal's leading scorers, and would bring much needed size to a team that is widely considered "small".

Lecavalier isn't the star he once was though. Adding him makes some sense but not a ton. They don't have a ton of cap room, they're going to have to open the books for Subban next year, they have to either sign or replace a bunch of depth forwards...he's not a guy you completely shape an off-season strategy around and that's more or less what the Habs would have to do.

Lecavalier's 33 and in decline. Is he really the type of player the Leafs should be going after? On the current roster he'd be the oldest player on the team.

This team should be in the business of acquiring good young players. I'm not all that interested in Lecavalier.

On Capgeek's website, they have Lecavalier's buyout of $30 million calculated over the next 14 years.  I was under the impression that these buyouts were just that, lump sum payment up front to buyout the contract.  So Vinny has to wait for 14 years to get all his money from Tampa?

He's still hovering around a point-per-game. I'd be thrilled to see him sign a (reasonable) three-year deal with the Leafs.

2/3s of the amount over twice the term, same as a regular buyout, it just doesn't carry a cap hit.

But that's almost the point of signing him. The team is fine for young players. Adding Lecavalier, a veteran presence with a cup ring and playoff experience, wouldn't change that the Leafs are still a very young team and would add to an area you could even argue they're deficient in.

And over the last three years he's produced at a 28 goal/66 point pace which, really, isn't much of a decline from the player he's been most of his career.

Right. It's essentially a yearly pension he gets until he's 47.

I don't mind adding a veteran presence as a complimentary piece, like Jagr or Scuderi for example. Ideally you'd have a good young core and veteran pieces surrounding them. The LA Kings are a great example of that set-up. I don't think having a declining 33 year old as the centerpiece of your team is a good idea. Thrusting him into the 1st line centre role and asking him to be "the guy" is too much at this stage of Lecavalier's career.

But the Leafs would still have that. Adding Lecavalier wouldn't make Kessel or Phaneuf any less the main pieces of the team. Kessel would still be a better player than he is. Adding Lecavalier, even if he centers the first line, wouldn't make him the centerpiece of the team any more than Bozak centering the first line made him the centerpiece of the team.
