Lessor Frustration

If Burke quit talking about the playoffs as a goal all the time, and instead proclaimed that he was going to follow through with a traditional rebuild, would you be more at ease/comfortable with the state the team is in?  Would the losing, deficiencies, bad play, and growing pains be easier to swallow?

Well he has talked about playoffs for a few seasons. If we would have done it the traditional way we probably would have had a few more young stars. But I'm still quite happy about the fact that we have Dion and Phil. But we need more quality in the lineup. Burke must do something about that. The way I see it, we could probably use a decent veteran goalie, a veteran defenceman, and a big scoring winger. We do have better depth than for a few years ago though. But we need more quality. I don't even remember what it was like being in the playoffs, but it's getting harder to wait for each year. And to see us drop in the standings now is very frustrating, I don't want to have another season of no playoffs despite moves in order to get there. Burke should make a move.

It would bother me more if he was making moves that were playoff goal oriented (ie: shorter term) that did longer term damage.

Talk is just talk.  Can't take it literally.

That's pretty much where I'm at with it. The only "significant" asset he's moved out for a short-term fix was Boston's 2nd round pick for Liles. Everything else has either been made with longer term in mind or involved assets not worth overly concerning ourselves with (late round picks, long-shot prospects, etc).

Liles cost a second round pick in the summer.  What would he be worth at the trade deadline?

I am not recommending moving him, but he is the type of defenseman that will be in high demand and also provides a feasible option to clear cap space for another deal.

I want to keep him but to answer your question (which was discussed a short time ago) at least a 1st round pick or a top prospect - Kaberle (a similar D-man and also an upcoming UFA) went for both.
