Columbus is 4 points back with 2 games in hand.
Washington beat Anaheim to move to 4 points back with 12 games left.
Detroit is 5 points back with 2 games in hand (14 games left).

The Leafs need to win this game to get back on track.

I can easily see the Leafs taking the playoff drive to the last game of the season.

I don't even know what to feel about this team right now.  The way they come out to play good teams, and hand over their points and lunch money to the crappy ones has me so confused.  Especially since Tampa is just kind of mediocre right now.

I'm having trouble getting worked up about what is actually a really crucial game.  :(

I don't even know what this team would be without great goaltending.  It's scary to think about.

The Leafs are receiving a combined .917 SV% this season from their goaltenders, but are 5th worst in GA/G.  Calgary, Buffalo, Florida, Edmonton, Ottawa and NYI are their friends near the bottom.  In 2011-12 the Leafs team SV% was .897.

The Leafs have allowed 210 goals so far this season.  If the Leafs this season, allowing the number of shots they do, had the level of goaltending the Leafs had in 11-12, they would have allowed ~261 goals so far this season, or 47 more goals and would be a -56 in GF/GA differential.

Conversely, if the 11-12, team had this goaltending, they allow ~50 less goals against than they did, and go from a -33 differential to a +17 differential.  Poor Ronny.

To think all of a sudden this game is practically a must win otherwise the walls could start caving in around them.  The comfortable lead the Leafs held is disappearing rather quickly.

Will they come out with fire after a road trip that started off great but ended horribly, or will fatigue of a long trip play a major factor and be a reason (excuse?) for poor play.  I don't even know anymore with this team.

I hope Drew starts just to make things more antagonistic with Reimer.  It's the Carlyle way.

But we don't have to think about it. That's the luxury of having it.

It is relevant if almost every other area of your team's game is poor and you require that level of goaltending in order to win.  This team has made no significant improvements in any areas on the ice since Ron Wilson was fired other than received better goaltending.  PK is still one of the worst in the league, GA still one of the worst in the league, possession numbers are even worse, shots against are even worse.

It's completely relevant to demonstrate how this is a poor team being propped up by an elite goaltender.  It's sad, because I don't think this is a poor roster, and I do not think it is a worse roster than in '11-'12.

Completely agreed.

Wouldn't surprise me. It also really wouldn't surprise me if it's their failure to win games in regulation/Ot through November and December that costs them a playoff spot.

It wouldn't surprise me if not winning enough cost them their playoff spot either.

Right, but we have elite goaltending, a pretty darn good offense, and a winning record. Not to mention what looks like a second consecutive trip to the playoffs, with a very young team. Which team would you rather have, this one, or the team Burke and Wilson ran?
