Malkin Signs Long-term

8 years, $76M -- $9.5M cap hit.

The Pens put to rest pretty quickly all the speculation that was already growing.  Can't go wrong securing two of the best players in the world for at least the next eight years.

Well, it's a ton of dough for two guys but you have to figure that as long as both of them are healthy it's hard to imagine the Penguins ever being unable to make the playoffs even with only the barest minimum of contributions elsewhere.

I imagine the cap will start to go up again after next season like before.

The biggest question mark now is Letang.  Can they afford to keep him at $7M+, or do they move him out and try and trade him for three or four younger/cheaper pieces.

Also makes their pronouncement that Fleury is their guy look silly now.  That $5M can be better spent elsewhere.  Unless of course that was all for media consumption.

So what's the hold up on the Kessel extension?  I was under the false impression that deals couldn't get done until after the NHL season was over but I was wrong.

"Agreed to terms" is what the official release says, the deal isn't actually officially official.

Nothing can officially be signed until July 1st for players who still have a season left on their deal. This Malkin extension is still, technically, unofficial.

So I'm not that out of touch after all!  :D

Regarding Letang, that's a very good question.

As for Fleury, it's the old boys club effect. It seems like they'll keep him around until he's ruined enough playoff runs for them and their window of opportunity to win is over.

Well, that or they've learned a lesson from Vancouver and don't think the best way to speak publicly about a high priced goalie they want to trade is to make him sound like an broken down '79 Pacer

I'd be too but regardless there's not much to take from the statement.

Hey.  I'm nursing a '79 Pacer right now, bub.  It's only got 338k on it, should be good for another 15 years min.

Good grief, I would love Letang on the Leafs.

Huge money to Crosby and Malkin but tough to argue that any two players deserve it more.

They won't let him go, no way.

They would be better off trading James Neal and whoever else rather than lose Letang.
