Marlies Talk

Interesting that Will Acton is the son of Keith Acton. Looks like Gysbers and Acton went to the same university. Good that we give the kid a shot, he looks to be more gifted offensively than Gysbers, so hopefully he can pan out into an interesting prospect should they choose to keep him.

I don't even remember the Leafs drafting this guy.

I think he's closer to being a Marlie than a Leaf...and even that is a year or two off probably.

On reflection, I guess someone should start up a Prospects thread.

David Broll...sixth rounder. Was probably the most impressive of the drafted forwards at the prospects camp. One of the best fighters in the OHL. And he was like a top 5 pick in the OHL draft...could be a huge steal? If not...who cares.

At worst he's a 4th line enforcer. And apparently (as shown by his OHL draft placement) there are people who think he has potential for more than that.

Probably won't be a Leaf any time soon though.

Anyone know what the line combinations will look like, to date, for the upcoming season?

It's pretty difficult to say, but if I had to take a random guess I'd say something like this:

Hamilton-Zigomanis-Frattin
Caputi-Colborne-Crabb
Brenner-Hodgman-Scott
Mueller-Crescenzi-D'Amigo
Greenop-Caruna-Ryan
Mitchell-Acton-Wilson
Devane

Gardiner-Holzer
Mikus-Gysbers
Blacker-Finger
Brennan-Engel

Scrivens
Rynnas
Owuya

I think that's everybody. A few things to note: 1) That doesn't include guys like Rosehill, Boyce, Dupuis, or Lashoff who could potentially find themselves sent down. 2) That's a crowded forward group. Obviously, there's a few candidates who could easily go down to the ECHL without anybody really worrying. But some of our younger guys like Mueller, D'Amigo, and Ryan are really going to have to battle for roster spots and ice-time. 3) What happens to the goalie situation? Both Scrivens and Rynnas had good stretches in the AHL last season, but Owuya needs playing time too. Does he go back to Sweden for a year or down to the ECHL? My guess would be Sweden.

Awesome thanks!

In a minor move, the Leafs re-signed Brayden Irwin this morning... I doubt he'll ever play another game as a Leaf but I guess the brass have been happy with his AHL play.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was technically the Marlies who signed him. Not really a big difference, but he can't be called up by the Leafs (unless he signs an actual deal with them) and he won't count against the 50-man contract limit.

Ah, well even better then I suppose.

Marlies win season opener last night against the Binghampton Senators on the road 3-2. Scrivens gets the win and Crabb, Boyce and Colborne with the goals.

Here's the line-up from the Marlies first game:

Caputi - Colborne - Crabb
Mueller - Zigomanis - Hamilton
D'Amigo - Boyce - Scott
Brenner - Ryan - Wilson

Aulie - Finger
Mikus - Holzer
Lashoff - Blacker

Scrivens
Rynnas

With the Marlies depth, there are probably going to be a number of players rotating in and out of the line-up. Engel and Gysbers sat on defence last night. Irwin, Devane, and Acton were the forwards out. And Owuya was the goalie sitting.

I'd imagine in a few weeks some players will be getting sent to the ECHL once Dallas Eakins has a better idea of who fits where.

Especially since one or both of Kadri and Frattin will be returning to the Marlies, it's going to be crowsed for sure.

I mentioned in the CHL thread that Devane has been sent back to the OHL for his overage year, and today Owuya was sent to the ECHL to get some playing time. That clears up a rather crowded Marlies roster a little bit.

i would think Owuya will stay in the ECHL all year, get lots of play as  a starter there.  won?t hurt his development , I seem to remember a guy  called Reimer played the year there 2-3 years ago.

Ryan Hamilton was named the teams captain. Zigomanis and Finger wore the 'A's last night.

Kinda of bitter sweet, getting the C anytime is nice, but in the AHL it usually means your chances of ever being called up are slim.

I thought Hamilton should have been given a shot late last year, just to see what he could do at the NHL level.

If there is one guy I'd really like to see excell with the marlies this year it has got to be Colbourne.  I want to see him score at a ppg+ to give us some hope he can become a top center in the NHL.

Couldn't agree more.

6 points in 3 games including 3 goals makes for a nice start.
