Real_ESPNLeBrun: RT @TBLightning: The Lightning have signed defenseman Matt Carle to a six-year contract tonight, Steve Yzerman has announced.

DarrenDreger: Carles agrees to 6 year contract with Tampa Bay. $5.5 aav.

Is it wrong that I'm kind of jazzed about the possibility that Detroit might not be that good next year?

The Flyers didn't get Suter, Pronger is perennially injured and now they have lost Carle.

They might need some defensemen next year especially with the always stellar Bryzgalov in net.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how they fare without Lidstrom and without having been able to find a really good replacement for him (assuming they don't pull of a trade for someone).

I like what Yzerman is doing with the 'Bolts...blueline looks good but he still needs to add a bit of a bruiser IMO. I'm anxious to see how Lindback pans out.

Timonen is their lone puck-mover back there now too, I'd imagine that's something they'll look to address.

We may finally be seeing the beginning of the end of Detroit's incredible run of excellent teams.  Sure, they still have lots of good players, but Holland cannot be feeling good about missing out on both Suter and Parise, and now Carle.

Isn't that why they got Luke S.?  They'll be leaning heavily on him.

Signing Carle, especially to a contract like that, would have reeked of desperation for the Wings. They'd be better off exploring the trade market or placing all their bets on Weber next summer.

They still have Meszaros, who can fill the secondary puck mover role when he's healthy - though, how effective he'll be coming off of back surgery is certainly in question. They are going to be relying pretty heavily on a 37 year old Timonen, though. If Pronger isn't healthy enough to go and they don't add someone else back there, their transition game is almost certainly going to take a hit.

I think this just applies to every team but the Leafs for you.

I know you're kidding - but don't worry I'll pass judgement on the Leafs if Burke ever actually does something. How many times has Yzerman been on the radio the past 2 weeks discussing how he's going to "upgrade" Tampa's roster?

There is areason we don't hear from Yzerman on the radio.  No one covers the team and no one would be listening either. Burke doesn't have that luxury.

I'm liking the Liles deal more and more.

As long as Liles plays more like pre-injured Liles than post injured Liles.  He dropped off near the end there.
