Montreal trades Cole to Dallas for Ryder

At first glance, this looks like a very good trade for Montreal. Which doesn't make me very happy. I thought injuries were just about to take a toll on them.

Erik Cole sent to Dallas in Exchange for Ryder

The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Erik Cole to the Dallas Stars in exchange for forward Michael Ryder.

The trade returns Ryder to the organization that drafted him in the 8th round (216th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Hate to say it but this is a very good trade for Montreal. Ryder's had a productive year scoring 14 points in 19 games. Cole's been floundering with only 6 points in 19 games played. Ryder's also on an expiring contract while Cole's still owed 4.5 M per year for the next two seasons after this. Montreal now has 12.5 M in cap space for next season ALL their guys signed except Desharnais (and the cheap and insignificant Colby Armstrong, Boullion, Yannic Weber Ryan White). They'll probably also amnesty Kaberle and his 4.25 M at the end of the season. Expect the Habs to be big players on the free agent market this July.

I don't get the reasoning behind Dallas doing this unless Ryder asked to get out. They've taken on a longer contract of a less productive player(last year removed) who has come out and said he may retire because of the new CBA.

I think this one works out nicely for Dallas actually. I think Cole rebounds the way Ryder did going to the Stars last season, and I think Ryder tails off.

Do you have your fingers crossed while saying this? We can always hope for the best I guess.

No. I really think Ryder's rebound in production had a lot to do with the system in Dallas and his linemates. He and Cole play a similar game, so I can easily see the same thing happening to Cole in Dallas and Ryder not really fitting in with Habs - kinda like Cole.

Well hopefully it works out better for them than the James Neal trade.

It certainly couldn't be any worse.

But why take on an older player with a longer contract for a player who put up similar numbers on your team last season, and was putting up much better numbers than Cole this season?  They think he'll be better value for his deal than what they'd want to re-sign Ryder for?

TSNBobMcKenzie: MTL also acquires a 3rd round pick from DAL in the Ryder-Cole swap.

Clearly, the contract wasn't an issue to Dallas, otherwise the pick would have been going the other way.

DarrenDreger: Dallas was looking for a forward who's tougher to play against. They see that in Erik Cole and give up the upside of Ryder to get him.

Cole does use his physicality more effectively than Ryder does.

Cole has been brutal and they give up an additional pick for him? This deal makes no sense for Dallas

Perry seems like a good target.
