Leafs sign 1st round pick Morgan Reilly to 3-year ELC.

I don't expect him to make the team this season, but I'm sure he's pleased to have this done before the new CBA kicks in.

If he's not playing in the NHL this year isn't this a bit premature?

Not really. It's somewhat common. A player still gets any signing bonus in the deal so there's a bit of money in his pocket. And with a new CBA there's a good chance entry level contracts get worse for the player than better.

Which makes this move absolutely baffling in my opinion.

Not necessarily. He got nice money this time and the Leafs may count on some discount in upcoming contract. Right now the Leafs can afford it as they have enough cap room, in 2-3 years with some big name UFA available, who knows, there might be a strategy. But if nothing else, it shows Reilly the Leafs really want him. If they can afford it, why the hell not.

Man, with all of your bitterness, why don't you just become a Sens fan?

How can something be bitter if it ends in an exclamation mark? Good natured funnin' is allowed here, you really need to relax.

Look, I don't profess to be an expert...in fact, I really don't know a damn thing about how the new CBA is going to have an effect on this contract.

But your suggestion that this will buy us some goodwill three years from now with a fking kid that just got drafted, well, I think that's bananas.

Other teams are signing their kids, so I assume that the league is suggesting business as usual with this stuff.

Maybe, but, A) I don't expect there will be substantial changes to the entry-level system in the new CBA and B) player's entry level contracts have historically been governed by the CBA they were drafted under when a new CBA kicks in in before they sign. Really, this is all about him getting the signing bonus now instead of later.

Yeah, I don't see why this would be an issue at all. After seeing what went on with Schultz in the off-season you'd think getting a draft pick signed would basically be the least controversial thing a team could do.

I'm relaxed and fairly content actually with how things are progressing with the team.  I would be ok with another year not making the playoffs as long as we don't ship out a bunch of top end prospects.  It seems when someone debates with you, they need to relax, but when you grill some poster's comments and calling them out as wrong because you say so, it's ok?

Anyways, it's all good natured fun here so no need to worry about me.

When you want to "debate" a joke, then yes, you do need to relax. You're the only one who does that though so, you know, I wouldn't be so quick to speak for anyone else.

I was gonna go on trying to explain how my "debate" was only a comment, but forget it.  It's not even worth it.

Why? Isn't one of the arguing points like 5 yr ELCs instead of 3yrs? Wouldn't that be better for the Leafs?

Which is why Reilly would be happy to sign it now. As is though the changes to the ELC are just part of the NHL's opening offer and are far from a sure thing to make it into the new CBA.

We will be very happy with Rielly on board.  I'm pretty happy we got him signed.  I was wondering if it would happen with all the other signings.  He has a good opportunity to be the leader on defense here in Moose Jaw with several of the vets likely to move to NHL farm teams this year (provided there is no work stoppage).  I'm looking forward to a full year with him here (Moose Jaw).  I feel relief that he is signed now; for some reason I feared some sort of problem getting him signed.  Just pessimism I guess.  I wonder if there will be a few more Leaf jerseys worn at Warriors games now?  :)
