Morgan Rielly

I have to admit I know very little about this kid. I was hoping a discussion would shed some light on him....

Apparently he's a high end offensive dman
-Very strong skater
-described as being an intelligent player
-A work in progress in his own zone
-Emphasis seems to be on him being a high character guy with a strong work ethic, probably what sold our scouting staff on him as their pick
-missed most of the year with an acl injury

A lot of reports have him as a high upside kind of guy

From my best source:

- phenominal skater, able to manufacture a high level of speed in only 2 strides
- high end passer, playmaker and puckhandler who can navigate through traffic at top speed - very tough to do at the speed he travels.
- has a great shot but is a pass first kind of player
- uses his skating and speed to get the puck out of trouble in his zone and lead the breakout
- uses his stick and positioning in the defensive zone

And to deal with the cliche of offensive d-men who have trouble in their own zone... I liked this line the best...

- Has fewer hiccups defensively than most puck moving d-men at his age.

:)

PITTSBURGH - That Morgan Rielly suffered a major knee injury didn?t worry the Maple Leafs.

In fact, the perseverance demonstrated by the Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman as he spent most of the winter in rehabilitation endeared him to the Leafs even more.

?When we researched him, that?s what kept coming up ? this kid never viewed the injury as a setback,? Leafs general manager Brian Burke said on Friday night, moments after Toronto chose Rielly with the fifth pick in the 2012 National Hockey League entry draft.

?He viewed it as a challenge, and he met that challenge with legendary workouts to rehab this. While he was hurt, he was meeting his team on the road when he could not play. Little things like that showed character. This kid was brought up right. The way he attacked his rehab and recovered was impressive.?

Rielly tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Nov. 6 when he crashed into the goal post during a game and rejoined the Warriors in the playoffs on April 20.

?It was a pretty long wait after I hurt my knee to now,? said Rielly, who had surgery on Dec. 1. ?It has been a long road with a lot of work. I had some times when I questioned whether the draft was going to work for me, and I did not really know what to expect. But I kept training hard and it paid off. I never had to deal with that before. But I feel I grew a bit as a person and learned a lot about how to treat your body.?

?Hearing people explain to me I couldn?t play again (last season), that was what drove me even more. I appreciate all those people saying I couldn?t do it, but I?m pretty happy I got to play in the playoffs.?

In Rielly, the Leafs selected a player who compared himself to Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang. They had him ranked No. 1 on their list, and Burke said he would have taken Rielly first had the Leafs had that pick.

?I would not say that if it was not true, just to build up the pick,? Burke said. ?He has a high hockey IQ, high compete level, makes smart decisions, the future is very bright for him.?

Will that future include a spot on the Leafs? blue line next season? Don?t count on it. But in training camp in 2013, that could change.

?We are not expecting him to play this year,? Burke said. ?It?s up to him. This is a guy you don?t have to tell where the weight room is. You don?t have to tell how to work hard. This is a guy you don?t have to tell how to practise.?

Since he was drafted last night, I've heard him compared to Kris Letang, Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty and Brian Leetch.

Well, the thing is, you can't compare him to just one of those guys because he has the best features of all them.

Question: what does an ACL injury do to a player's skating these days?  If skating is one of his best assets, could it be compromised by the injury?

My question is do the Leafs plan on developing this kid or does he become trade bait down the road in a deal for a centerman if Shultz is signed next week?

They can fix them up better than new these days.

I gotta say that the reports on his recovery sound better than gally's.  All Galchenyuk did was get really good at call of duty.

Yeah, one of the analysts on TSN last night said tearing your ACL now is not as big of a deal as it used to be.

Can we also lay down the law about the spelling of the kid's name?  It's stupid -- yes, STUPID -- that they spell it this way, but there you go.  It will drive me nuts seeing it constantly spelled the way it should be ....  is there any way to install an autocorrect on the site so it gets spelled "Rielly"?

Recovery times can vary and he made it back for the first round of the OHL playoffs.

But what shall I do when waxing wryly over B.B.'s Bill O'Reilly like mass riling, less soothing than the other famous B.B., Riley King, the better half of le bleu et blanc, bitter like the tip of a Sarnia Sting...

How can you call somebody stupid for the way their last name is spelled? It seems like you're just looking for reasons to b*tch right now.

Having been able to see Rielly regularly in Moose Jaw, I think we got a good one.  We may not have gotten that big Centre we had all hoped for, but when Rielly is on the ice, he makes things happen.  The Warriors were a threat when he was on the ice and he made the whole team better.  I remember thinking when he came back from the injury and played that we might be taking a hit as he might be tentative, but he came out flying and it didn't look like he had even been away.  Give him a chance to show you what he can do and as you get to see more of him he will impress.  While he isn't the choice I expected either, I'm ecstatic we got him.  Just thought I'd give my thoughts, having seen him play a lot.

Thanks for your input;  it's good to hear a first-hand account of his play.
