MSL traded to NYR for Callahan and picks

On the same day Steven Stamkos announced he is ready to return to the lineup, the Tampa Bay Lightning have traded Martin St. Louis to the New York Rangers in exchange for Ryan Callahan, a first round pick (2015) and second round pick (2014).

FriedgeHNIC: Lightning AGM Pat Verbeek was in VAN last week -- curious to see what TB has planned here with these extra picks...

FriedgeHNIC: If they have no interest in signing Callahan to a long-term deal, they will have room to add a few pieces. Maybe not from VAN, but elsewhere

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Told that Callahan camp went down even further close to $6 million a year, still north of it though, but that NMC was big issue too

DarrenDreger: If Callahan signs with the Lightning, the Rangers get an additional pick back. #Tradecentre

The picks were an overpayment.

St Louis is a significantly better player than Callahan and has another year on his contract. The Rangers get an extra season with a better player for a guy that was likely heading to free agency in the summer and a couple picks. No overpayment at all.

A reunion for Richards and St. Louis here, haven't seen many people mention that. Didn't they play on the same line in Tampa?

Real_ESPNLeBrun: More details: the 2nd-rounder in 2014 to Tampa becomes a 1st if NYR gets to conf final; if Callahan re-signs in TB (con'td)

Real_ESPNLeBrun: then NYR get TB 2nd in 2015 and TB gets Rangers 7th in 2015

They're good friends apparently.

The reunion may be short-lived though. NYR still has to think long and hard about an amnesty buyout for Richards this summer.

Well, St. Louis is a tool. Hopefully his transition to the Rangers goes as smoothly as other big names that have gone there in the past.

After Messier, none of the big names who signed on with Rangers (monster contracts, can't imagine why Sather is still a GM there), have ever worked out.

Jagr worked out pretty well for the Rangers and, if we're just talking about end results, the Gomez deal worked out ok.

He is also 38 and undersized.  I think it is overpayment for him.

Reigning Art Ross trophy winner and he's in better shape at 38 than most of the league. He's also a PPG player this season playing largely with a couple of unknown rookies since Stamkos went down. He'll still be a 1st line winger for another couple of seasons.

You'd think, after being in the top 10 in scoring just about every season in the past decade, people would realize that the whole "undersized" thing is garbage. Even at 38, he's a first liner.

For some reason though, I can see his numbers dropping off quite a bit now not because of his age, but because of the team he's on.

But he's "undersized." I'd like the trade a lot better if the return was for an oversized player with half as many points.

This.

If he was 2' tall it still wouldn't matter if he produces like he does.

I was going to say it's felt like forever since the Rangers had a PPG player but Stepan and Nash were pretty close to it last season under Vigneault, and Gaborik had some great seasons there too. So it's not like he's going into LA where goals barely exist. He might not finish top-10 again but I'd have him pegged for maybe low-70s next season.
