NAS trades Seth Jones to CBS for Ryan Johansen

Woah-indeed. This seemed like the Schenn-JVR deal where people talked about it for so long it really just seemed inevitable.

Reasonable deal for both teams?  Good defenseman who has the potential to be a front line guy at some point in his career for a player who has the potential to be a top line forward.

Johansen steps in and is Nashvilles forward scoring leader right away.  Roman Josi is their current points leader with 30.

Have NSH soured on him or do they just have a surplus of D?

You can really only go so far with Mike Riberio as your top line centre. I'm sure they still think very, very highly of Jones but something had to be done.

Surplus on D and a real need for a quality offensive C.

Pretty reasonable deal, I'd say. Two young guys, both with top line/pair ability/potential.

I think the only question now is, why is Lou not stealing players in deals for us already.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a rare player for player deal ... that actually works for both teams.

Yeah, upon reflection this makes some sense. I guess Columbus might be resigned to trying to replace Johansen in this year's draft.

I have a really hard time seeing Columbus finish anywhere but 30th in the league at this point.  So they have a pretty good shot at getting Matthews if not one of the fantastic wingers.

Their forward group is awful and expensive.

It's pretty shockingly bad. 2.5 million for Rene Bourque? 1.7 for Jared Boll?

But hey, at least that 5.25 million they're spending on Clarkson is all there on the ice.

It is my considered opinion that I would not have traded Seth Jones. Period.

I concede the Nashville need and their excess of blue line talent, but I would not have traded Seth Jones.

This makes a lot of sense for both teams.

I give the edge to the Predators because I personally would take a front-line stud forward over a similar stud D any day of the week.

Man I've been wanting Seth Jones for a long time to come to the Leafs.  I wanted to trade kessel for Jones almost 1.5 years ago...maybe more. Johanssen plays the more important position though, so, Nashville did well on this.

I don't know if #1 C is definitely more important than #1 D. It's pretty neck and neck I think.
