Well, that certainly sounds like an upgrade over past years.

From that article it sounds like they don't do on-ice stuff at the combine. That generally makes me question the use of it a bit.  It's not like the NFL where you test a guy's 40 time because running as fast as you can happens a lot in Football or in the NBA where your vertical leap comes into effect.

I get a sort of general fitness testing but you'd think we'd get lap times and slapshot velocities and such. One of the ways the NFL has built their draft into what they have is by being able to hype prospects and say things like "He's the fastest receiver in the draft". Wouldn't we all want to know Strome's time around the ice vs. Marner's? Or Hanifin's shot speed?

Or maybe I'm wrong Maybe there's useful information in an off-ice combine.

There is much useful information gleaned from the NHL combine.  I am particularly interested in both the left and right hand grip test, push ups, vertical leap, and the seated medicine ball throw.  All highly accurate indicators of how well a prospect plays hockey.

If there's one thing last year's team lacked, it was core strength.

I've always wanted them to do that type of testing (lap speed, slap shot strength) during training camp too. It'd be great to have that information released to the public.

It'd be hard to convince teams or the PA to do it at training camp because of the way that information could be used against or for players, either by the public or for contract stuff. Could you imagine if Kessel was a half second slower around the rink this year?
