Gary Bettman is going to formally announce an expansion process.  Not the greatest kept secret.  Congratulations to Las Vegas in advance.

The expansion draft is basically the only reason to look forward to this.

Hmmm, who could we reasonably expect to discard...?  I hope and assume expansion teams get no break on the salary cap floor for any period of time.

Can the Leafs get out of bad contracts by making them available in the expansion draft?  Any rules around it?

We're looking at least 2 seasons down the line, likely more. Too early to really tell who might be on the discard pile.

Bettman's really trying to emphasize the point that there's the possibility of no expansion teams coming out of this process. I don't think anyone is buying it.

So perhaps a $500 million entry fee.  Forbes has just 10 teams valued at more than $500 million for 2014.  The Jets for example are valued at $358 million.  It must be nice to have this kind of money to potentially lose.

Looks like Lemieux and co. are selling the Penguins...expected offers are between $700m - $850m.

It's a bit of a seller's market right now: rates are low, business is strong, and the league is looking at expansion.

Mario is disgusted at having a floater like Kessel on the team and immediately put the team up for sale when he heard of the trade. #TorontoMediaPerspective

Well, who was the greater player may still be some sort of debate but Lemieux sure as heck out-owned Gretzky.

So Quebecor submitted a bid for Quebec City, but Seattle is out?

EDIT:  I can't imagine that the NHL doesn't go (back) to Quebec City:  wealthy owners plus a fancy new rink that'll be ready in a couple of years.

Sooner than that, set to open up this September!

Apparently only 2 teams have formally applied for expansion: Quebec City and Las Vegas. Nothing from Seattle or Toronto. Guessing Bettman isn't too thrilled about that.

Still a few weeks until the deadline (I believe it was set for August 10th), but I wonder, if there's only 2 submissions, does the league feel there's not enough interest to continue the process? You'd have to think they're looking at bringing in 2 teams, and I don't think they'd be too happy having only the 2 options - unless both show themselves to be excellent (and I mean excellent) options.

The Montreal-based media giant sent in its widely expected expansion bid to the National Hockey League before Monday's deadline.

I swear I saw August 10th for it the other day. Must have been for something else. Oh well. That muddles the process even more. Only 2 bids by the deadline . . . the BoG isn't going to be too impressed by that. I certainly wouldn't be confident betting on the NHL expanding right now.
