The Norris trophy nominees were announced. The top 3 are:

PK Subban - 11 goals, 38 points in 42 games. 23:14 TOI/G

Ryan Suter - 4 goals, 32 points in 48 games. 27:16 TOI/G

Kris Letang - 5 goals, 38 points in 35 games. 25:38 TOI/G

I'd probably lean towards Suter due to leading the league in ice-time while still putting up pretty decent offensive numbers. Last year's choice of Karlsson, however, leads me to think that writers are more inclined to choose Letang or Subban.

My guess is that it's a 50/50 coin toss between Suter and Subban.

Letang may have unreal offensive numbers, but he's nowhere near being a superb all-around D-man.

and Subban is?

To be fair to him, although I agree that I'm not a huge fan, he did play more 5 on 5 and shorthanded icetime than Subban did so he was used in a more all-around capacity than Subban was.

Worth mentioning too, I suppose, that Suter despite easily leading in total ice time, got the least PP time of the three by almost a full minute per game.

Who got the "tougher" minutes? That is, who of those three were always (without exception) put against the other team's best players? I don't have the answer to that but my gut says Suter and if that's right, I think he'd be my choice.

I think Suter is going to win this.  Don't know what consideration will be given to the fact he looked just fine without Weber, but I'd give some bearing to that.

Letang's offensive numbers are ridiculous, but I can see him only playing 35 games being a detriment.

Well, none of them. Leaving aside that given that these guys play 3-7 minutes more per game than just about any forward and therefore will have to, by default, play against another team's lesser lights it doesn't make sense for a coach to only put his #1 offensive defensemen in a shut down role exclusively. To capitalize on the offense these guys can contribute you want them out there when their team can carry the play as well as react to it.

I've always liked Letang, but I think Suter wins it because he's out of Weber's shadow.

I'm assuming Suter is a staple on his team's PK. Both Letang and Subban too? Huh, didn't know that.

Sort of. Letang had the most PK time of the three at 2:12 per game but that ranks him 87th among D-men according to NHL.com(who, admittedly, don't filter for guys who played only a handful of games). So while all three were parts of the PK, none of them were their team's #1 options there.

edit: That's not true, actually. Suter, at 2:07 in SH time per game, did lead the Wild's defensemen. Minnesota spent the least amount of time shorthanded this season of any team.

Don't get too stressed out about this award guys.  Thanks to Matt Cooke, the Norris this year will be awarded to the league's 2nd best defenseman.

true enough. Matt Cooke needs to be out of the NHL permanently.

Or just play the sens. He'll travel with the team and just play on whatever team they're facing.

Some reports out there are saying that PK Subban won the Norris and it will be announced during the cup final.
