Nylander has just signed his ELC with the Leafs.

Did your official Maple Leafs app just notify you of this?

Nonis overpaid once again.  Incredible.

I was serious.  As soon as my phone went off with a nice the Maple Leafs Mobile message declaring the news, I saw you posted it.

Or am I the only loser with the Official Toronto Maple Leafs app?

You might be.  I saw the Leafs post it on Twitter, as well as 70000 others simultaneously.

Don't feel bad - I have it too.  I just turned off all the notifications.

Leafs high on Nylander in more ways than one ...

"Not only does William Nylander bring a high level of speed and skill to his game but he has a very strong character on and off the ice," Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis said. "We believe he has a very bright future and are happy to have him signed to his first NHL contract."

"He's a dynamic player with a high-end skill set," Maple Leafs director of player development Jim Hughes said. "His edges, his explosion, his acceleration, along with his hand speed. He's a really talented kid. During the prospect camp week we got the opportunity to know him as a person. He's very detailed, he's very motivated. And he's a wonderful kid that's been parented correctly. He's an impressive hockey player, but he's an impressive person as well."

Don't knwo where to put this, but I'm even more glad we didn't pick Ho-Sang.

I don't think the kid is wrong, but he seems highly egotistical and knows nothing about tact.

Wouldn't that also describe guys like Brett Hull, Jeremy Roenick and Eric Lindros?

Yeah. The "attitude" really only becomes a problem if he can't back it up on the ice. He's a kid who is confident in his abilities and has a chip on his shoulders. It happens.

I guess you could make that comparison, although I get Lindros a bit more because he was exalted so much. But sometimes you have to wonder if it doesn't mess up the chemistry in the room, especially for a kid that really hasn't proven anything yet. I think it's a fair worry, and if it's costing him a spot on the team then he should learn to challenge his superiors with a little more tact. I don't think a semi-tirade to the media is going to win him any support.

He reminds me, being outspoken, of P.K. Subban, but on a different level, one in which others may attribute to being "egotistical" or tactless.

Ho-Sang obviously understands at this point what it's going to take to make the Team Canada roster for any upcoming championship:

..."the only way I'd be on that (World Junior) team is if I played in the NHL, that's probably the only way I could get on that team."

Guys like Ho-Sang obviously aren't always seen as team players by all.  With the Islanders, he's going in with an attitude of wanting to be his best playing alongside (one) of the best (Tavares):

While Ho-Sang admitted he's not sure where he will be playing come of the start of the season, he is not planning on sitting back, just being happy to be there.

"What's my goal? Ho-Sang said, repeating the question. "It's to be better than everyone else there. I want to be better than John Tavares, I know he's an unbelievable player and I want to push myself against those guys because that's how you get there. If I'm going head to head and pushing toes with Johnny T, chances are pretty good that I'd make the team."

Sounds like a kid who knows what he's gotta do.

Not bad, actually.

I'm guessing he would bristle at the idea that the guys at Hockey Canada are his "superiors" and rightfully so. They're guys who are supposed to be putting the best team together in the national interests and good national programs can deal with players who think highly of themselves. If they're not putting him on the team because he's publicly challenging them to explain why then it's more of a mark of a lack of professionalism on their part, in my opinion.

After reading the article, I did not find him to sound arrogant, just confident. I watched him in the "O" where he was a good player, who IMO got seen off in the playoffs.

The other, more positive, news of the day was that ESPN has ranked Nylander as the 4th best prospect.

Hell, I was just surprised to discover ESPN has anyone covering hockey.

Capgeek has Nylander's contract details up:

http://www.capgeek.com/player/3490

Same contract that Rielly signed. Base salary of $925,000 with performances bonuses that could bring him up to $1,775,000.

The truth of the matter is, if he was as good as he believes he is, he wouldn't have to talk so damn much.

Congrats to Nylander. Good luck in camp.
