Panthers trade Fleischmann to Ducks

Heatley is almost up there with Tiger Woods in the See How the Mighty Have Fallen hall of shame.

That's the second player the Panthers have traded away.  Seems odd that they are dismantling when they are so close to a playoff spot.  Heatley is done as an NHL player.  That's the 2nd 3rd round pick that Florida has acquired though.  I guess it's possible they may be trying to acquire assets to make a bigger trade?

They know they're not going to win the Cup, so they're getting assets for pending UFAs that aren't going to re-sign. It's smart management, really. Though, they also did recently add Jagr, so, who knows? They're roughly even in terms of assets in and out.

I know it's good asset management.  It just seems like Florida could use even a brief playoff run to build their franchise at this point.  Fleischmann and Bergenheim certainly aren't going to make or break that ability but as you said, the Jagr acquisition seems odd in comparison.  I guess Heatley could surprise or something but I don't know.

In both cases Florida is probably better off playing their kids in those roles. Bergenheim asked for a trade too.

Why did they trade picks for Jagr? To sell a few tickets? I'm not clear what Tallon is up to but I don't think he's stupid. I'm just kind of curious.
