Paul Ranger

Fanatic

New member
I could just as easily have started this thread on the main Leafs page, but since there is a lockout I will keep it here.

Today during the Marlies game the Sportsnet panel opined that Ranger just might be the best D man on the Leafs if the NHL season were to get going.

For those familiar with him please discuss his game.

Is he already signed to an HHL contract? If so, for how long?

A lot of talk about him in the training camp thread.

Lots of positive talk about Paul Ranger so far at training camp:

Jon Abbott ‏@HockeyAbbs
#Marlies coach Eakins says first day of camp is about commitment. Ranger produced the best overall fitness scores after being off 3 yrs

According to Dallas Eakins, Paul Ranger finished number one in off-ice testing.

Jon Abbott ‏@HockeyAbbs
Eakins was "amazed" at what kind of shape Ranger is in. Felt he set the bar for rest of team. #greatstory more on @Leafs_TV tonight at 6pm

More praise for Paul Ranger, Eakins said he was one of the best players during their scrimmage today.

Good for him though I feel a little bad for him... Who knows but there might have been a chance for him to crack the Leafs roster. Crappy timing. Still, it's nice that he's back in the game and is appearing to do well.

I think we all like a good comeback story, and we have had too few around here of late to cheer for.

This guy is still young, big and talented. I loved the signing and training camp reports have been very encouraging.

This could be the highlight story of the season for Toronto. If not for the Leafs, than certainly for the Marlies. I'm hoping for the Leafs sometime this year.

AHL only.

Wouldn't take much to change that I don't think, once there is a CBA.

It was good to see Paul Ranger playing again, having missed nearly 3 years of hockey for personal reasons that he still won't talk about. But apart from missing his man for Hamilton's only goal, he and Blacker were a solid pair.

I believe he signed a one year AHL deal for this season. Not sure if he can break that to play for the Leafs this season, if there is one.

NHL contracts over-ride AHL deals, so, yeah, if the team wants him to play for the big club, they can make that happen.

That's probably a bit of a stretch. Maybe the Ranger from his Tampa days, and almost definitely had he been playing for the last few years. But to think he'll be a top-pairing defencemen after the time he missed is expecting way too much.

I think we really need to temper what Ranger was a few years ago too:  He was good with Tampa.  But he had 3.5 NHL seasons under his belt and his career best was 31 points.
The Sportsnet panel is just trying to stir the pot and create a controversy/insult Phaneuf.

Paul Ranger wasn't a world beater in Tampa Bay and he won't be in Toronto. Hopefully he can provide depth and help the team win.

Yeah. I mean, really, at his peak, Ranger was a 2nd pairing guy. What was said about him last night was total hyperbole.

Averaged 21 minutes a game, so yes, a #3/4 dman on most teams. I could care less if he ever makes it back to the show. I'm just happy to see that he's taken care of some of the personal issues and is putting the past behind him.

Probably a good replacement for Franson?

Bob Mackenzie was saying that there is no desire between the Leafs or Ranger to alter his current AHL only contract with the organization.  Anyone know why Ranger does not want to play in the NHL?

I think given his past absence from the game he wants to get his feet wet in the AHL and the Leafs new this when they signed him, perhaps they'll look at bringing him to the NHL camp next season.

I think it's been mentioned a few times. Ranger isn't coming to camp and right now has no interest in the NHL. He wants to see how this year goes in the A, at least from what's been reported.

Yep. On the road with the Marlies right now.
