Perry signs extension with Anaheim

Still some interesting UFAs out there. Trades can be fun too. Hey, I'd have loved either Getzlaf or Perry but that's some serious bacon.

That's a tonne of money. Makes sense to keep the two of them together though.

so, Bobby Ryan to the Leafs?

Flyers I'd bet. Besides, I Think we're in decent shape as far as our top 6 wingers go. I'd rather concentrate my efforts on a top 4 d and a #1 c.

So much for the bs of wanting to come home because you know he wold have gotten at least that much as a UFA.  Mind you playing in California where no one knows who you are can be very attractive.

He can get 8 years instead of max 7 as UFA.

Yet more evidence of why Burke's initial approach of July 1st being his draft was a mistake.  The cap has absolutely destroyed the trade market and free agency in general.

Some have predicted this could lead to some big sign-and-trade deals.  I'm not sure anyone will pull it off though.

The problem with that is that, as we've sort of come to see in the NBA, is that because there's not going to be a world of difference between what one team or another is able to offer a UFA(Perry's almost certainly couldn't have gotten more than a couple hundred thousand more per year on the open market if that) the only players who will make it to free agency are the ones who really want to leave the teams they're on.

What that means is that the star players who do want to leave, and it's only star players who will be affected really by the 7/8 year thing, will want to leave. So the teams they're leaving won't really have any leverage in any sort of sign and trade. In the NBA, when star players leave as free agents, the teams they leave really only get the equivalent of 4th-5th round picks in exchange for facilitating the arrangement.

Well, if we're looking for somewhere to direct our ire Burke's lousy strategy should come in a distant second to MLSE's continually being on board with a CBA that effectively neuters the competitive advantage they had because they had a terrific fan base.

MLSE were NOT "continually being on board with a CBA that effectively neuters the competitive advantage". They were simply and significantly outnumbered by other owners who saw the CBA as a path to some of MLSE's money.

A CBA they voted in favour of(twice!). If they weren't on board, they'd have voted against it.

I'm not so convinced they move him. If they do, it certainly won't be until the summer, but, even then, they have room on the cap to fill out their line-up, no prominent RFAs and, unless Selanne decides to go for another year, no significant UFAs to deal with either (at least, no one that isn't replaceable from within or for relatively cheap). If they need cap space, with the success Fasth has had, I suspect they'll look to trade Hiller, not Ryan.
