Peter Holland may be done as a Leaf

Too bad. I always liked him and I think he would do well as a third or fourth liner. He always has had decent point production. Hopefully the Leafs can trade him and at least get something for him. I'm guessing Babcock doesn't like him for some reason. Perhaps he is a defensive liability.

Is it too early to start thinking about the expansion draft?  According to the article on TSN last week, the Leafs still need to find two forwards that meet the minimum games played criteria (40 games this year, or 70 games over the last two).

I was thinking that Holland would fit that criteria assuming he was resigned.  Could we trade him for a Vet that meets the criteria perhaps?

That's a good point actually. I wonder who the Leafs will give up for the expansion draft.

Yeah, he requested a trade. Understandable, he wants to play. Fifth on the depth chart. Not going on the road trip was management's call. Shouldn't be too long, we all know how ruthless Lou is.

He did clear waivers but, iirc, that was a tactic used due to his pending arbitration hearing. Not much of a market though, agreed.

There must be aspects of his game that just aren't good enough at the NHL level.  Someone mentioned the faceoffs.  He could also be quite poor defensively.  His offensive numbers should be more than good enough to keep him playing at the NHL level on pretty much any team.  It's too bad that he hasn't figured out the rest by now.  This could mean the end of his career.

right now wouldn't that mean Komorav, Martin or Bozak or you recall one of the Marlie veterans.

Komarov, Martin and Bozak would satisfy the requirement however the buried contracts wouldn't.  Both Laich's and Michalek's contracts expire this year and in order to satisfy the the 40/70 requirement they have to be signed for next season.  If any of the 3 (Leo, Martin or Bozak) were left unprotected, I would expect they would be selected by Vegas.  Since we have the room to protect them with all the exempt players we have, it would be silly to lose an asset like that for nothing.

Lupul would qualify if he's healthy and plays at least 34 games this season but that doesn't look likely.  Leivo needs to play 40 games this season in order to qualify.  Ben Smith needs to play another 21 games but would need to be re-signed for next season.

I'm not sure how they plan on winning a Stanley Cup in the next 5 years without a guy like Peter Holland at $1.3 on the cap in the press box.

Bozak I agree and Komarov I suppose but Martin? I don't know to what extent he'd be jumped on by an expansion team. If they want a Martin-type kind of player they can probably get one through free agency. I have to think they'd be more tempted by the possibility of someone like Marincin.

My guess is the Leafs re-sign Smith to something around the league minimum and Martin, Smith and Marincin are the three guys who meet the criteria for the draft.

While I agree with Frank that this isn't all that big a loss I think this is a moment to pause and remember that when people say things like "Well, we'll just leave X in the marlies for another year" or "Well, he'll just be the 13th forward until injuries hit" when defending lousy lineup decisions that these are people with career ambitions who might not like those things.
