Polak Suspended 2 games

Not a huge fan of Polak, but he is in beast mode lately.

Bjorkstrand turns to the boards in the last second, at the time I even thought that 5 minutes major was way too much, 2 minutes would be ok, also a late call on the game.

Anyway, Maricin and Leivo (for Fehr) are in tonight.

Sure? I don't have a problem with the suspension, but I'll never quite understand how boarding infractions are judged. The Sosh on Bergeron one seemed equally bad to me.

I think its a terrible call. Didn't even think it was 5 minutes. He has been playing great lately so his toughness will be missed.

it seems to come down to how the guy getting hit looks afterwards.  if he skates away from it usually not an issue ..if he has to be helped off the ice ..suspension.

Marincin in instead of Marchenko?  Babcock not caring about right hand / left hand shots anymore?

Which is a stupid way to police behaviour.

Maybe but it is how society tends to do it.

I remember having this discussion here before...

If you pull the trigger on a bad hit, you should be punished for it, regardless of whether you make the intended contact or not.

If someone takes a flying elbow at a player's head, but the target is super awesome and dodges it, Muy Thai guy should still get the book thrown at him. Ramp up the punishment if there is injury on top of the intention, which is how reasonable societies tend to do it with obvious infractions (e.g. guns).

Understandably, this is difficult to assess on the ice at game speed, but it's really not that hard to figure out with all the camera angles, and hearings the next day.

But isn't that more or less how the NHL does it? Serious injuries don't have to occur for big suspensions to be handed out(See Chris Simon v. Ryan Hollweg) but injuries are a factor when determining suspensions.

2 games is what I figured when the hearing was announced. It's basically a token suspension for a hit the league doesn't like, but isn't egregiously bad or intended to injure. Sort of a "be more careful/pay better attention next time" suspension.

I don't know if it can be considered particularly consistent.

Edit: I don't have any particular instances to cite beyond something like Kadri on Sedin, or the instance that Carlton referenced with Soshnikov boarding Bergeron.

Consistency is the hobgoblin of little departments of player safety.

Not a Polak fan...

Look who sticks up for McDavid.

I didn't realize that Jersey had a shot at catching Arizona for 2nd worst.  So the tanking strategy comes into play if you're top 3 in the draft I suppose.  For some reason I had thought Jersey wasn't quite that low in the standings.

There were several similar hits in the game last night that weren't called at all. Obviously none resulted in an injury, but had the referees called one of the earlier ones....

The suspension is excessive.

Not only has Polak never been suspended in a 11 year career, but the player he hit turned toward the boards after Polak had moved to check him. Polak's hit was ardly a full force body check as he seemed to slide off the opposing player probably due to the fact that the player turned at the last possible moment.

As for you comment about other incidents, Siney Crosby deliberately chopped a an opposing player in the nuts (from behind I believe) and there was no call and in another game either last night or the night before I saw a reply of one player kicking another in the same spot. Once again no call.

Even if these incidents were somehow missed by the eagle eyed two referees and both linesmen, where is the player safety department? Should that brain trust not be reviewing such incidents?

Inconsistent and poor enforcement of the rules undermines one's confidence in the integrity of the game and the league.
