Potential Buyouts

Just looking at the NHL rosters and figuring what teams might take advantage of this gesture.

I don't think as many teams need option this as I first guessed.

I figure that there are the 3 categories: Most Definitely, Might, and Can't See It.

Most Definitely:
NYR - Wade Redden
Montreal - Scott Gomez
Van - Keith Ballard (At least: will still not be able to get under the $60 MIL cap next season)

Might:
Boston - Marc Savard??
Buffalo - Ville Leino
Chicago - Rostislav Olesz
Edmonton - Shawn Horcoff
Florida - Brian Campbell
Minnesota - Dany Heatley
NYI - Rick DiPietro
Philadelphia - Ilya Bryzgalov, Chris Pronger??
San Jose - Patrick Marleau or Joe Thornton (can't see both fitting under $60 MIL cap)
Tampa Bay - ???? (Also can't fit under $60 MIL cap next year)

Makes me kinda pissed that we bought out Colby for no reason.

But Colby got bought out for what? A million a year? I don't think it'd be the 1 millon dollar salaries that we'd see getting bought out. It would be the Lombardi type contracts.

From what I'm reading though, the buyouts would only happen after this season, if this season takes place.

Yeah but there's no point buying someone out who's contract is over this year!! He, along with Lombardi and Connolly all have their contracts finished this summer. Its an extra $1mil down the drain for what? So we could sign Jay McClement?

It's important to remember that these buyouts don't become an option until the summer and the $60M cap (if that's where it lands) is for the 13/14 season. There could easily be a lot of player movement before any of this comes into effect.

Have there been any comments on whether it will be possible to buy out injured players (eg: Pronger, Savard?)

Also, any chance you can buy out past buy-outs?  eg: Tucker, Armstrong?

Will the buy-outs be at 100% of the cost of the player or just some fraction of the player cost?

It burns me to no end that Philly and the Rangers are going to get out of their bad contracts.

It sucks to no end that Toronto has paid full price for all their mistakes (Armstrong, Tucker).  Arggggg.  We need to get on the good side of exploiting CBA loopholes.

Last time the league had compliance buyouts, teams were not allowed to buyout players who had not been medically cleared to play. I imagine it'll be the same this time - and, assuming LTIR stays roughly the same, there won't be need for teams to buy these guys out to free up cap space.

Definitely not. Tucker's and Armstrong's buyouts would both be in their last seasons when this came into effect any way, and there are more beneficial ways to use them than to waste both to save $2M.

I think last time they were at 2/3s of the contract, but, I'm not 100% certain on that.

That is what I am assuming as well regarding the LITR players.  I had to include them just in case.

I strongly suspect that the $60.2 MIL cap will be in place with a $44 MIL floor.  Most players I flagged have NTCs which will make them harder to move.  Also their ROI isn't great either based on the salary vs performance.

I think Tampa would rid themselves of Lecavalier.

Yeah, Lecavalier is the most logical buyout in Tampa.  I wonder if he would do the 'Colby' thing and sign somewhere for a 1/3 or his original contract?  ie:$2.6 MIL for 6 years?

Other than Redden, Gomez, Olesz and Ballard, I doubt anyone you flagged gets bought out. They may not provide the greatest ROI, but they are, for the most part, important contributing members of their teams. They're guys that teams will move a smaller contract so that they can retain their services. For instance, there's no way San Jose buys out Marleau or Thornton, or Florida buys out Campbell. Last time the league did this, teams were not allowed to re-sign the guys they bought out, and I have to imagine it will be the same this time around.

I highly doubt that a team would use these buyouts unless they absolutely need them for cap purposes. Florida, a team that figures to be in financial trouble, probably won't be too keen on paying Brian Campbell to not play hockey for them and then still have to hit a 44 million dollar cap floor.

I remember reading about concern for guys like Redden who could potentially be injured and thus not qualify to be bought out.  I wonder if he gets thicker pads/kevlar vest/body cast for the rest of the season.  ;D

Sorry for the redundant questions ...

Depending on what kind of contract Del Zotto ends up with, the Rangers are actually in a position where they could keep him on their NHL roster and scratch him every night if there's any 12/13 season to be played.

I can't believe the team they have. You have to think they're amongst favourites to win if the season started tomorrow.
