Predictions: NHL Standings

Cutting it pretty close to the start of the season, but we haven't done this yet so lets see: who makes the playoffs and who doesn't?

If you forgot about how the new standings work, here's a refresher:

The top three teams in each division will make up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season record and regardless of division. It is possible for one division in each conference to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends just three.

Boston
Tampa Bay
Montreal

Pittsburgh
New Jersey
Columbus
New York Rangers
New York Islanders

St. Louis
Chicago
Dallas
Colorado

Los Angeles
Anaheim
San Jose
Vancouver

East

1. Boston
2. NY Rangers
3. Tampa Bay
4. Pittsburgh
5. Philadelphia
6. Ottawa
7. Detroit
8. NY Islanders

9. Montreal
10. Columbus
11. Toronto
12. Washington
13. NJ Devils
14. Buffalo
15. Carolina
16. Florida

West

1. Los Angeles
2. Chicago
3. Anaheim
4. St Louis
5. Dallas
6. San Jose
7. Colorado
8. Winnipeg

9. Minnesota
10. Arizona
11. Edmonton
12. Vancouver
13. Nashville
14. Calgary

This is what I've got:

East:

Tampa Bay
Boston
Pittsburgh
Montreal
New York (R)
New Jersey
New York (I)
Washington

Detroit
Columbus
Toronto
Florida
Philadelphia
Ottawa
Carolina
Buffalo

Tampa takes over as the top team in the East. I think they have quite easily have the best defence in the conference, so even if Bishop's number regress a tad it shouldn't be a big deal. Stamkos and their ridiculous collection of young forwards will be exciting to watch too. Boston drops because they haven't found a way to stop Chara from aging and lost two key players in Iginla and Boychuk without replacing them in any way.

On the other side, Philly is probably a surprise that low, but their defence was pretty meh even with Timonen, so losing their best guy on the backend will be devastating. I think losing Hartnell from their top line will have more of an effect than they anticipated, and the real Steve Mason will show up too.

West:

Anaheim
LA
Chicago
San Jose
St. Louis
Dallas
Minnesota
Colorado

Nashville
Phoenix
Edmonton
Calgary
Vancouver
Winnipeg

You can pretty much just cancel the season and roll a die for the first 8 spots there. I feel pretty bad for non-playoff teams in the West last season. Nashville is the only team that I considered making it close, but while Colorado will almost assuredly drop, I can't see them falling out of the top-8.

sens make the playoffs, I put 'Go Sens Go' under my avatar for as long as they are in the playoffs. If they don't, you put 'Go Leafs Go' under yours during the first round?

When I was doing this I wasn't sure how low I should put Calgary. I thought having a solid goalie like Hiller could keep them out of last place in the West. Then I saw their forward lines for opening night (keep in mind Sean Monahan is out with the flu):

Glencross-Colborne-Hudler
Raymond-Backlund-Bouma
Gaudreau-Byron-Jones
Bollig-Stajan-McGrattan

Soo yeah, bump Vancouver and Winnipeg up a spot on my standings.

I think the East is wide open so why not.  Also the Leafs look very fast, and ten times better then they did last season.

Flake you must be what 1 for 10 now on your Leaf making the playoffs predictions? Don't get me wrong I appreciate your tenacity, and to drop a proverb "even a broken clock is right twice a day"
