Looks like Panik's fighting for a spot.

I think that the Grabner trade pushed him out of the top-9, and a Boyes/Glencross signing would push him out of the line-up entirely. Which is too bad really I think, I would have liked to see what he could do with an increased role this season.

Can we send Panik to the Marlies without losing him on waivers?  (Of course even there we've got Kapanen, Brown, Soshnikov, Liepsic, Frattin, Leivo, Bailey, Rodewald... hmm, maybe another 5-for-1 deal is coming)

Nope, he has to pass through waivers. That's how we got him in the first place from Tampa.

Looks like Frattin gets a spot tonight. Somehow I feel, Matty will end up on waivers if he doesn't do something next to walking on water to impress. Or as mentioned, another 5 for 1

It would suck to lose a young serviceable player but I don't see what he brings that Glencross doesn't.

Youth? Cost control at the end of the season (if still on the roster)?
What does Glencross bring to the table that Panik does not?

Youth, mainly. Glencross is probably a better player and would make for a better return at the deadline. Panik is a decent player, but really, a 3rd liner at best. I'd prefer to keep him, but I wouldn't lose any sleep if the Leafs moved him. I wouldn't just toss him on waivers, though - I'm sure there's a trade that can be worked out, even if the return is only likely to be a late round pick.

Perhaps when the roster is closer to being set, there'll be some moves?

Granted it was without a lot of PP opportunity but we are still talking about a guy who put up 17 points.  I think we saw flashes of a player who could maybe be a decent 3rd line guy who could even pull the odd shift on a 2nd line as the 6th best forward kind of thing but that's really his peak potential.  If we lose him, that's not something to lose any sleep over but getting something, even if it's a 6th/7th round pick would be more ideal than losing him for nothing just to try and get another 2nd/3rd round pick at the deadline.

If one figures that Glencross is worth a 3rd round pick at the deadline, wouldn't it be better to sign him and waive Panik?  I mean, sure, trade him if anyone is willing to pay a pick, but I have my doubts given what's currently available on the UFA market.

And really, isn't Panik's upside a current Curtis Glencross, and likely @ the same money?  Who really cares about age for a bottom six $1mil guy?  They're totally replaceable.

Just FYI for people who are looking for streaming options.  I've been using http://nhl-stream.com the last 3 games and it has worked great.  Don't click on anything saying install some video player.  You don't actually need to and it avoids any potential malware issue.  Just full screen the video when it starts and you're good to go.  Enjoy!

Panik's youth and RFA status might make him a little more appealing than what's available on the UFA market.

Might.  Him being restricted only helps from a negotiating his next deal perspective, and really, if he's a marginal guy anyways, that negotiating strength isn't worth much coming off of a $975K deal.  Hell, Tlusty could have been had for less than $1mil.  Glencross might come in at $1m...Boyes maybe $1.5m.

Thanks Avro!  The stream is great quality and no pop-ups.

This is my first pre-season game, and I've already seen more forwards supporting pinching defencemen than all the games I watched last year.
