Red Sox sign David Price, 7 years and $217 million

EDIT: There is also an opt out after 3 seasons.  Not sure if team or player option.

Holy moly, that's an average of $31M per year! Could you imagine earning even 1/100th of that. I think that is the highest annual salary in MLB history.

Sucks that it's with a team in the division but other than that while I'm not exactly "happy" the Jays didn't sign him, the $31 million per year price tag makes it much easier to swallow.

As others have said, that price tag is hefty, but not having his arm in the rotation and now having to face it in division is a bit of a body blow.

But...Stroman.

I love Stroman...I really do.  I want to see him pitch 200 innings first.

I think it was pretty clear the Jays were never going to sign Price.  They hired a new President/GM who's notorious for penny pinching.  We have an ownership group that penny pinches and does Hollywood math to make their revenues minuscule.  Price at 200+ million for 7 years is a bad investment overall.  The latter half of that contract is going to be painful and if a team isn't willing to increase payroll when they get a massive influx of cash, they won't be able to sustain it when the crowds go back to 20-30K.

It's just sad to watch him go to a rival so he can kick the Jays behinds like he has done his entire career.  Boston has now added two elite relievers and a legitimate #1 to a roster of high quality up and coming position players.  They played everyone tough down the stretch last year.  I think I have them in as my tentative favourite to win the AL East now.

But ownership is a publicly traded corporation with a fiduciary duty primarily to their shareholders.  I don't think it's as simple as calling them penny pinching, they're answerable to shareholders in a way far different from many MLB teams privately owned.

Disappointed...YES
Surprised...NO

You can't fault the Jays, they can't offer $217 million and set a record dollar amount for a pitcher.
I think the worst part is Price is going to a division rival for at least the next 3 years.

Hopefully this lights a fire under Jays management though to go get us one more starting pitcher for 2016, preferably someone out of that second free agent pitching tier behind Price, Grienke and Cueto or trade for one.

Any idea roughly what the Jays were offering? Or what they might have been comfortable offering? There was a report earlier that the Red Sox were willing to offer $30mil more than any other team, just curious if that was somewhat accurate.

As a fan, it gives me great comfort that the Blue Jays and their ownership are in the business of making their shareholders happy and not in the business of winning championships. That's really what every fan wants out of their favourite sports team.

Apparently the Jays didn't make an offer to Price (at least nothing formal) so I guess we will never know.                    I heard St. Louis offered 7 years, but less than $200 million so yeah its possible Boston was willing to go $30 million more than any other team.

EDIT: Bob Nightengale of USA Today confirms: The Cardinals were also in the hunt for Price, and offered him the richest contract in franchise history, a seven-year deal worth at least $30 million less than the Red Sox's offer.

I'm guessing the Jays had a pretty good idea of what his contract demands were going to be before he even hit the open market. They already knew they weren't in the market.

I'm just disappointed he's staying in the division... I mean at the end of the day it's not my money and I don't care what the Jays would have paid him, but I think everyone knew deep down there was no chance he'd be back

It's nice that AA dined and dashed on the bill so Rogers and Shapiro can take the blame for not having a 200 million dollar payroll.

I'm not fully versed on the Blue Jays' management structure but I would think AA needed authorization from higher up to take on as much salary as he did at the deadline.

Except he didn't add much in terms of actual expenditures or year to year payroll. They added the pro-rated remainders of Revere, Price and Lowe's one year deals and Tulowitzki/Hawkins for Reyes was payroll neutral.

So in terms of 2015 payroll, he only added about 6 million which very well might have been within whatever budget he was given at the start of the year. The issue was always how the payroll would balloon if they tried to keep the group together past this year.

Right. And that would have been known at the time the moves were made, would it not? So why allow it to happen if you knew you weren't going to stay the course?

This is kind of how I feel.

All I hear about is "Rogers makes so much money, they should've been able to afford Price".

The casual fan doesn't give a damn about the economics of the game.
