"Redskins" finally gone; Blackhawks' racist logo must be next

High time they get rid of it.  I've read their latest nonsensical explanation about "honoring" Black Hawk.  Indigenous people aren't mascots and images of them do them no honor.

And unlike the Redskins, they have an easy fix: you know, a black-colored hawk.  Heck, just PS the Thrashers' logo if they want to save money.  ::)

In talking about a long-awaited change to get rid of using a racial slur in a team name, you've used that slur twice.

I still can't believe that they didn't jump on that redesigned logo from a few years back that a First Nations designer made.

I think you're referring to this one in case anyone didn't see it:

Rather than all the traditionalists crap, it's just a hockey team after all, I think this is a big opportunity for marketing and the accompanying sales of merchandise.

That probably underestimates the amount of reactionary dingdongs out there who are fuming about this stuff. The only thing that finally prompted movement on this from Washington is a real threat to their bottom line in the form of sponsors pulling out and online stores refusing to carry their stuff. Absent that, it's probably safe to assume that changing the name/logo either doesn't present a ton of opportunity or at least not enough to overcome an owner's stubbornness.

I agree, I thought that would've made a great logo. It would have been so easy to test it out on a set of third jerseys and see how popular it was. If the fans liked it they could've transitioned it to their primary jerseys and put the classic logo on their thirds before phasing it out completely.

If they did it gradually and had been ahead of the curve on all this I doubt anybody would have complained.

That's beautiful.

I thought this is an interesting point (being made by a Native no-mascot activist), which I would not have thought of:

But it isn?t yet clear if one of the letter?s asks, that the team?s burgundy and gold color scheme be changed, will be acceded to.

?One thing we have seen where there have been shifts like this in the past is there can be a faction of fans that refuse to retreat from stereotypical names and logos, and not changing the colors would allow for that behavior,? Fredericks said. Changing the name and logo doesn?t mean as much if tens of thousands of fans stream into FedEx Field wearing their old team gear.

So that would be an argument against using the design referenced above.  Making a clean break with new team colors puts an exclamation point on the decision and signals that this isn't a grudging half-measure.

Feels like you could get around that pretty easily by just having a rule against wearing the team's old gear into the stadium.

I mean, the kind of people who are going to ignore the name change don't seem less likely to be jerks about if all of a sudden the old gear isn't quite as colour coordinated with other fans as they'd like.
