Reimer avoids arbitration

In a year when they have to lock up Bernier, 2.3M will be far too much for a backup. In fact, that's too much now. Sign him to trade him maybe?

Two, arguably, no. 1 goalies for a combined 5.2 million ain't so bad.  I would be happy keeping them both this year, and actually using Reimer, and seeing how things shake out.  Bernier played way too much last year, and Reimer not enough.  And the goalie market kind of blows right now, so they would probably trading him for a pretty small return.

Bernier's RFA when his deal ends so the decision can wait a little while at least.  As it stands this season it's not too much $ for a tandem.

@DamoSpin

Reimer's inability to fill for injured Bernier costs 3 coaches, 2 execs their jobs. And he gets $4.6 million.

That's really only true if Bernier emerges as a near Vezina like 65+ game a year guy. Otherwise they can probably "lock up" Bernier and pay Reimer 2.3 and still not pay as much for both goalies as the Rangers pay Lundqvist.

Seriously? Give your head a shake. This is a steal. Reimer could easily steal the starters role

Not at all. A quality backup can cost close to $2M, and, when you don't have a guy on the roster who has even started 50 NHL games in a season, you need more than just a backup. Until one of Reimer or Bernier proves they can handle a starter's work load, this is still very much a platoon situation.

I guessed they'd have to pay him 2.4 so I can't bicker much. I think they just boosted his trade/asset value with the 2 year deal.

Ugh, Cox is such a douchebag.  If it wasn't for Reimer the Leafs would have won the cup and everyone would be farting nickels, but instead the organization has been set on its ear.

I'm with you, this could be a very good tandem next year for slightly more than Clarkson is getting.  If Reimer has a bounce back year, his trade value may be higher next year with one more year on his contract at a pretty affordable cap hit.

I'm happy with the extra year on his contract. I'm also happy about the tandem for another year.

Last year I thought we should be so lucky to have two quality goalies, but now I think it's a win for the Leafs all around in front of the net. I agree that his trade value just went up a bit with the extra year on his contract, if he steps up this season, we could see a very good return on Reims.

I'm surprised to see Reimer sign a 2 year deal with the Leafs in light of what happened last season between him and Carlyle.  I think that Reimer is an excellent goalie and between him and Bernier the Leafs have two of the best goalies in the league.

Yes some in Leafs org blame Reimer for what happened at end of year. Which is part of why they deserved to go.

I think that's more or less right but I don't think it should be glossed over that Reimer wasn't all that good last year, even for a back-up. Obviously he shouldn't be blamed for the Leafs' collapse but going forward he is going to have to adapt to being a #2 or 1B and the Leafs goaltending situation is probably going to have to depend on him being someone who'll play once every week or so and still be able to deliver.

He wasn't that to a large extent last year. Hopefully he can adjust going forward.

And this is all true.  Reimer was a problem for the Leafs, especially down the stretch.  The first two months he was very good and then he wasn't anymore December (.909), January (.865), February (.896).  Part of that was the team just completely collapsed but he was struggling to keep himself in control.

I like bringing him back though for three reasons.
1) There really isn't anyone better on the market
2) Reimer had a similar season to Bernier a year ago and we could watch Bernier struggle this year and Reimer can be pretty good
3) If we do trade him, I'd like to see him rebound a bit before we move him to see if it increases his value if say Winnipeg finally gets tired of playing terrible goaltenders.

But overall a .911 SV% for a backup is not bad.  His ending of the season makes it seem worse than it really was.  Even Bernier was bad in that stretch (injury of course).

Should Gardiner get the bridge deal, the Leafs should have around 2.5 under the cap, and that's with Franson. Not bad.

I agree with all that. I think that until Bernier really erases all doubt about his ability to be a top-flight #1 the team will want to go with a #2 who they're pretty comfortable with taking over and that's not something I think you can say about guys like Chad Johnson or Greiss right now.

But the season is the season.  You can't say his seemed worse than it really was.  It was exactly as bad as it really was.

Cox as usual overplays his hand but Reimer failed when they needed him most.  Sure, the rest of the team failed too so I can't blame Reimer alone.  But he also didn't show he could step up and steal a game or two, either.
