Richard Panik traded to Chicago for Jeremy Morin

Morin's ceiling seems like it might be marginally higher, maybe. He's bounced around a little, though. Seems like sort of a 'why bother' kind of deal to me, but, hopefully it works out.

Any chance of Panik making the big club in Chicago?  With this, and the Daley/Scuderi trade, they've certainly been wheeling and dealing...

This article sheds a little light on Morin's status with the Hawks prior to the deal: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/ct-jeremy-morin-blackhawks-spt-1218-20151217-story.html

Quenneville says that he'll at least start with the Hawks, yeah. Certainly stands the chance to replace either Ryan Garbutt or Bryan Bickell on their 4th line.

I can't get to the page.  It keeps putting me in an endless loop of 'not now'.

What is the gist?

Part of it:

Jeremy Morin still is having difficulty understanding just how it has come to be that he currently is playing hockey in the Blackhawks organization.

The winger once had a bright future with the Hawks before inconsistent play ? mostly in the defensive end ? led to management's lack of faith in him and upset his career path.

Morin was traded to the Blue Jackets during the 2014-15 season and after an undistinguished stint with them, the Hawks reacquired the 24-year-old. The team that seemingly had given up on him brought him back in the trade that sent Brandon Saad to Columbus. Morin is now living life in the AHL with the IceHogs.

"It's kind of a weird situation," Morin said. "But I can't dwell on it. I'm here right now and all I can control is how I play."

Morin hopes his play that has resulted in six goals and nine assists in 22 games for the IceHogs leads him back to the NHL, where he has 10 goals and 12 assists in 82 regular-season games. Given what has transpired with the Hawks, including earlier this season when Morin was scratched from an IceHogs game because he was part of a trade that eventually fell apart, it's not likely to be in Chicago.

"You get a little excited that it's a fresh start and new opportunity but it was something that didn't happen," Morin said of the failed trade. "Hopefully it will happen maybe in the future. My preference is to be playing in the NHL wherever I can. I don't really care about where it is, to be honest with you. You have to stay positive and just keep grinding."

Thanks for the quote Potvin. Incidentally the Chicago Trib's digital presence is just awful. I have tried to link to stories on their site for work and it never works. Every reputable paper allows at least a few free landings a month.

I think with these sorts of "why bother" deals the point is that you know what Richard Panik is, you've seen him for 75 games in the NHL, and you have a fair idea of how he meshes with everyone. With Morin you roll the dice that maybe he clicks with someone or fits in a little better. So, yeah, low risk and low reward but if you have a sense that you've exhausted your options with someone like Panik it does make a degree of sense to start that evaluative process with someone else.

Hopefully a good opportunity for Panik to find a role.

They look about even, with a small-sample-size edge to Morin. The pun-game is not quite as strong though.

McKeen's Yearbook
Once considered a top prospect for the Blackhawks, the second round pick in 2009 (45th overall) became available after demanding playing time, or to be moved ? sparking interest from a number of teams .. wish was fulfilled in November, being dealt to Columbus for Tim Erixon following a string of press box appearances and no points in 15 games. Averaged very little ice time and seemingly fell into disfavour in Chicago ? after lighting it up in the AHL for the past three seasons (54 goals in 114 game the past two seasons) ? failing to distinguish himself in holes created by injury .. missed significant time from late January due to an accelerate heart rate at rest, returning 25 games later .. dressed for the U.S. at the World Championships in Prague, firing two shots on goal in 10 games.. natural goal-scorer with quick, soft hands.. not overly physical or mean, yet will inject spurts of urgency, especially when a scoring chance arises .. drives aggressively into traffic areas.. doesn?t always make the optimal play.. will work the puck and wait for better openings or fire a surprise shot with distribution options available.

Definitely in the meh category.

Nik, as is usually the case, nails it.

I'm sure we'll be able to think of Morin time.

So apparently Panik will play for the Hawks out of the gate.

I wonder if this is the Leafs developing a relationship, at minimal cost, that may see them cash in some at the deadline when the Hawks are looking for a rental and know the Leafs are easy to deal with.

Anyone think you might see Morin with the Leafs and Froese or Arcobello back to the Marlies?

Wasn't the main selling point of hiring Lamoriello that he had all of these relationships established already?

I think it was more likely that Morin wasn't happy in Chicago knowing that Quenneville was unlikely to give him a shot and a deal came about that both teams could more or less swap a similar player but one that maybe Quenneville will like more for their bottom 6.

It's very possible that both players quietly made it known they'd be open to a change of scenery.

Morin was semi-public about it the first time around with Chicago, and was traded to Columbus. Then he got traded back into the same situation in the Saad deal, so he was probably pretty sad about that.

Haven't the Hawks been looking for a winger for Toews?

It'd be pretty crazy if Panik found a home there.

Arcobello has already been sent back, but that's probably because Froese is ready to go. Other than that, no. Morin is a winger, not a center. He'll get a chance with the Leafs soon enough, I imagine, but not in place of Froese/Arcobello.

I could be wrong but it seems like Chicago pretty frequently tries something like that, where they give someone like Viktor Stalberg a go on a top line, and soon they realize that Toews isn't really the guy who's going to turn anyone into an offensive dynamo.
