Rickard Rakell 6x$3.8 in Anaheim

I'm beginning to suspect there's something about most hockey players coming from strongly socialist countries that is coming out in salary negotiations.

Anaheim now has under $400k left in cap space with Hampus Lindholm still without a contract.

Any GM with cap space (or the ability to create cap space) who hasn't approached him about an offer sheet is an idiot.

Given the Leafs have access to the LTIR write-off with a few guys, could they sign him and put them on the LTIR or do they need to have the space before LTIR to offer sheet an RFA?

Considering it would probably cost them a First (lottery), second, and third-round pick...I don't see them biting on that.

Could be Philthy Phil 2.0

Hard to see how. Right now the best case scenario for the Leafs draft wise is probably Liljegren. Unless you believe Liljegren has a much higher upside than Lindholm you have to ask if you'd be willing to, blindly, trade a 1st, 2nd and 3rd to guarantee the right to get a Liljegren.

I don't know if it's a sure thing but the Leafs are way, way better situated to be making that sort of trade now than they were when they did it for Kessel.

If we offer sheet Lindholm successfully (or trade :\), Gardiner + for Trouba will not be far behind.

Won't LTIR open us up to cap overage penalties on bonuses?

If the Leafs could do both of those things, pretty much damn the torpedoes. The offer sheet route seems unlikely.

A core of Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Kadri, Rielly, Lindholm, Trouba, Zaitsev/Carrick sounds pretty enticing.

How are they acquiring both Trouba and Lindholm again?

I'm guessing since he he hasn't listed Gardiner, he'd be part of a trade package for one, and likely an offer sheet for the other.

I'm not a trade theorizer by nature, but there are two opportunities for projectable pieces to bolster an area of weakness at sustainable asset cost. I was just musing over the potential final product (core) to gauge my comfort level with potentially spending any unmentioned name on that list to achieve it.

To answer Frank E's direct question:

is merely a potential solution. Key pieces for the trade route would be Gardiner and JvR, with picks and B prospects to round things out.

I don't think it's super likely and I have plenty of comfort with staying the course. That being said, I'm far more into this idea than say acquiring Stamkos.

Gotcha.  Trade for one, offer sheet the other.

Don't see why. Rielly says he likes his off side and has moved to RD to play with Matt Hunwick. Couldn't he do the same with Lindholm?
