Edmonton has also signed Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to a 7 year extension.

I understand the potential thing, but he only has two seasons, 102 games and 76 points. It's a little ridiculous to offer him a 7 year 6 mil a year contract.

"Set to become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, Nugent-Hopkins inked a seven-year, $42-million contract extension with the Oilers Thursday."

How does that happen? He's only 20.

He's been playing for Edmonton since he was 15 years old.

They've amended it to "an restricted"

Somebody is having a rough day at work.

Somebody not having a rough day at work though is RNH  ;D

Edmonton's assuming a lot of risk with this signing. It's quite clear what their intention is: when they see themselves competing, 3-5 years down the road, they'll have that Hall/RNH/Eberle trio locked up at a pretty affordable rate and it'll help them field a more competitive team than if they were paying Hall 8, RNH 7, etc.

Until then, they're really paying this guy excessively for not a whole lot accomplished. And there's the injury concern, committing to a frail guy whose shoulders may not hold up.

But there's definitely a thought process behind it, even though I happen to think that Edmonton's management is not very good.

Wow. Well they better hope he develops a better two way game and that his injury last year won't affect his performance in the future.

He was on pace for 48-50 pts last year playing with some pretty offensively gifted players. I know it's kind of Scouts-in-Moneyball-esque, but I wonder if the kid will ever have the frame for the NHL game. I watched a bunch of him last year (as I had both Gagner and RNH) and he was easily knocked off the puck most games.

IMO Hall and Eberle had shown more when they signed their deals. There's a lot of risk in this contract (isn't he questionable to start the season due to an injury?).

That's probably a good question to ask Nazem Kadri.

Maybe there's a reason Edmonton has finished in the basement for half a decade now.

Yeah, I don't think it is ridiculous at all.  He's a #1 overall draft pick who might have won the Calder had he not been injured.  3 years from now with the cap at $80 million he'll look underpaid.

Yeah! Just like that Dipietro guy on Long Island.

I think the thing about these contracts, though, is that they make the players more valuable in a trade, not less. I think Edmonton's in a great position in a little while from now where they'll be able to look at Eberle and Hall and RNH and Yakupov and Gagner(I suppose) and decide who are the guys they want to build around going forward and then try and deal the odd man or men out for help elsewhere. I certainly wouldn't balk at Hall or Eberle at 6 million and provided RNH hasn't fallen off the face of the earth I think he's a pretty safe bet to be at least a 60-70 point guy.

I've always been in favour of bypassing the bridge contract when you feel confident enough in your player. Obviously, Edmonton feels confident in the guys that they have locked up and they have good reason to. We've always wondered how the Oilers could keep all these 1st overall draft picks under contract while still upgrading their defence and goaltending. Well, this is how. What's the point of signing these players to bridge contracts when there's a decent chance the team won't even be ready to compete for the Stanley Cup while they are on them? The team gives up a bit more cap space when cap space won't really be a concern, and in return when they are ready to take the step towards being a contender they'll have 4 top-line forwards signed for a total of $24mil (assuming Yakupov signs an identical contract). That's pretty darn good value right there, especially if the cap rises like everybody expects it to.
