Former Cleveland executive Ross Atkins is the new GM.  The Toronto Indians era is upon us.

Disheartening and underwhelming to say the least. A treacherous backhand from Rogers to the fans.

They're planning on trimming payroll, re-tooling the farm system and building up the club from within, which is a fine strategy when you're in re-building mode, but not something you do when you've had the season they've just had, if your primary concern is winning.

More mediocrity and years of waiting and hoping coming up, if previous attempts from this club and this corporate shrill's track record in Cleveland is any indication.

Thanks for completely turning me off from baseball for a while, Rogers.

Deep breaths.

The Cult of the Executive is strong here.

What does this mean?

I believe (at least pertaining to AA) it means basically latching onto AA as if he is the team's one and only true saviour sort of thing.  Acting as though the team is AA and AA is the team.

Shapiro = Shanahan
Atkins = Dubas
LaCava = Hunter

With Lou's experience divided up into all of the Jays guys.

Based on all the negative comments i've heard about these hirings, you would almost think AA didn't trade away a boatload of prospects who will very soon fall into the category of "why did we trade away that front line pitcher?  We could sure use a stud like him in the rotation."  I wonder if the trip to the playoffs was worth it.

Having heard what Atkins has to say now, I'm hoping this is what the Jays turn out to have.

Andrew Friedman, referenced in the article that Nik posted, sounds more like Dubas though.

If you ever get the chance, Jonah Keri's book about the work Friedman did with the Rays, The Extra 2%, is really worth a read.

I've heard of it, I think, through a Dubas interview. Thanks for the recommendation.
