Second post!

Nobody seems to care about this series. Neither do I, really. I think the Caps win it. The Isles have struggled down the stretch.

And now Kypreos is holding a hockey stick for absolutely no reason. Playoffs on Sportsnet lasted maybe 80 seconds for me. Off to NBC!

Sportsnet showing twitter trends on who should win the Calder Trophy. I honestly hate this channel.

CBC had their own problems.  Sportsnet managed to take all of those problems, give them a more prominent role and add on their own childish Sportsnet spin.  It's honestly a terrible product.

New York Islanders 4  Washington 1.  Islanders lead series 1 game to 0.

Calm, cool, and collected.  Those were the Islanders out there against the Capitals in Game 1.  Josh Bailey, Ryan Strome, and Beock Nelson, that line alone combined for 4 points to lead the Isles to victory.

The Islanders built up the lead in the second period and never relinquished it, as they stymied Washington's (league-best) powerplay and goaltender Halak provided sharp netminding to erode any hope that the Capitals had of scoring back.

Good overall job by the Islanders.  However, don't expect Washington nor Ovechkin to retrench as the Capitals are determined to improve themselves for Game 2.

Washington 4  NYIslanders 3  Series tied at 1 game apiece.

Talk about a couple of firsts:  Capitals rookie netminder Philipp Grubauer, (who started in place of the ailing Brayden Holtby), became the first-ever German-born rookie starter  in a playoff game in NHL history.

Plus, not since 2008, have the Capitals won In a playoff in which they trailed.

Thanks to some handiwork by Niklas Backstrom who led the Capitals with two goals.
As for the Islanders,  there were certainly lessons on how not to give away a lead not orice but twice in the same playoff game.  The Islanders did have their chances but could not execute properly enough and were at times sloppy in their own end.

Game 3 is set for Sunday in Uniondale, N.Y. at 12PM ET.

Going to overtime here. Pretty good game so far. Washington scored with about 6 minutes left in the 3rd to tie the game 1-1.

Bravo!  :)  Glad the Islanders took this one. They now lead 2 games to 1.  Should take the next one at home to pad up the series lead. Hope they do.

So with that goal, do Islanders - Capitals series now own the shortest OT and the longest OT?

Shortest OT  --  Canadiens Brian Skrudland in 9 seconds  (Game 2 of the Montreal /Calgary  Stanley Cup Final  May 18, 1986).

Longest  OT  --  Red Wings Mud Bruneteau after 176 minutes or six periods of OT (Detroit/Montreal Stanley Cup playoff game March 24, 1936).

For fun check out these:

For the Islanders, it was the shortest and fastest OT game in their history.
P.S. Loved the retro jerseys on both clubs in celebrating the "Easter Epic" 23rd Anniversary (NYIsanders/Washington May 19, 1987 and dubbed "the longest playoff Game 7 in NHL history" -- four overtimes).

Washington 5 NYIslanders 1  Washington leads series 3 games to 2.

The NYIslanders did a good job of keeping the Capitals forwards Alex Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom off the scoresheet, but it was Washington rookie Alex Kuznetsov who did the damage with his 2 goal performance.

Add to that some disorganized play by the Isles in their own zone, coupled with goaltender Halak's less-than-stellar performance, including too many New York penalties afforded the Capitals,  and therefore the ensuing result.

On the other side of things, the Capitals were particularly boorish in the offensive zone and capitalized on opportunities when they saw them.  Washington goaltender Brayden Holtby held the fort well now having stopped 98 out of 102 shots in Games 2, 3 & 4 combined.

A winning formula indeed for the Capitals so far.
As for the Islanders they'll need to regroup.

Game 6 is Saturday in Uniondale, N.Y. at 3PM.

NYIslanders 3  Washington 1  Series tied at 3 games apiece.

Back to the Verizon Centre for Game 7!

The Isles staved off elimination with a solid win over the Capitals at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale.

The Islanders John Tavares fired the first scoring salvo with the opening goal giving New York the lead, only to have Washington tie the game up.

It wasn't until halfway in the third period when former Maple Leaf  Nikolai Kulemin scored what turned out to be the winning goal for the Islanders.

Good effort, great win!

Game 7 goes Monday in Washington.
