The New York Islanders were the least penalized team this season and were also classified as being one of  the league's hardest hitting teams (aside from the Los Angeles Kings).  In particular, the line of Cal Clutterbuck, Casey Cizikas, & Matt Martin, was considered among one of the best fourth lines of any team.  When you consider the defensive duo of Nick Leddy & Travis Hamonic , whe by the way, had a very good second half (before being injured and was an integral part of the Islanders defence.  This in the face of the Islanders allowing a high number of shots per game and not so good overall team possession numbers.

while players such as Kyle Okposo had career years, veteran and captain John Tavares had by far among his worst offensive output in all of his years as an Islander.  Not a very positive aspect Johnny T  brought to his  game.  Yet give him the chance and he won't miss the opportunity to make the most of a scoring situation.  Now that's  a positive.

As for the Florida Panthers led by the seemingly unending and enduring energy of been there done that Jaromir Jagr, as well as the remarkably talented Alexander Barkov and a core group of youngsters that includes ever-improving defenceman Aaron Ekblad,  this first foray into the playoffs for this young and talented group will provide a certain test of the team's character.

The question then becomes,  will the Florida Panthers find it in them to bypass the Isles' tenacious hitting game and put offensive pressure on Islander goaltender Thomas Griese, who is subbing for the injured Halak?  Speaking of Griese, whom some consider as the team's MVP in the short time that he's been backstopping his team's wins, will he, can he, elevate his game a notch in these playoffs, where play becomes interise?  Can the Islanders do the same, that'is, obtain more output from guys like Johnny T?  How will not having the injured Harmonic on the backend weaken the D?

Will Jagr shine and can the young Panthers  take the playoff pressure?

Questions, questions, questions.  For answers, watch the games!

Pretty good game 1 here. At least for those who finally want to see some goals. 5-4 Islanders with 13 minutes left.

Smart fake by Tavares.  That was a sick move by Johnny T who finished with three points on the night.  He nearly singlehandedly decided Florida's fate in this game.

Islanders' goaltender Thomas Griese on making that last-minute pad save.

And Jagr being shaken up early in the action.  Ouch.

So far, so good.  Let's go Islanders!

Back to Brooklyn with the series tied at one apiece.  The Islanders need to step it up a bit and Griess needs to be on alert.

Hopefully playing at home will garner them the series lead.  C'mon Islanders!

Good job, Islanders!  They win 4-3 in OT, on Thomas Hickey's one-timer in the slot area.  Isles came from behind in this game(from a 3-1 deficit) to force OT.  All the Islander goals were scored in their the period.

Obviously, playing at home now makes a difference.

GO ISLANDERS!

The Panthers Jagr reaches milestone in Florida's Game 4 victory (2-1) over the Islanders.  Series tied at 2 apiece.

NYIslanders  2  Florida 1  20T  Islanders win series 4 games to 2.

Tavares!  And more Tavares!  New York Islanders captain John Tavares not only collected two goals on the night,  but was probably the most dangerous offensive weapon of the game.

With the clock ticking away in regulation time in the third period, an unattended Tavares found the loose puck after a scramble to the side of Florida netmhder Roberto Luongo, who was prone on the ice, and put it past Luongo into the open net.  The Islanders just tied it all up and sent the game into overtime.

It was a very exciting and fast-paced first overtime, as the Isles very well dominated in the offensive zone, taking every chance and shot they could, but fell short of the mark to connect.  The Panthers  had their hands full, so to speak, with the opposition pressing on.

On to double overtime, where it was Florida that dominated the play.  Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss, much like his opposing counterpart, Luongo, had to be as sharp for every shot on goal & chances created by the Panthers.  If not for some clever-stiokhandling by some of the Isles defencemen such as Harmonic and Leddy,  Greiss' work would have been complicated.

With Kyle Okposo skating up to the side, giving a short pass to Tavares  skating near the centre of the zone,  and Florida detenceman Aaron Ekblad in front of the his own goal area, Tavares took a wrist shot in close, the puck rebounding to the side of Luongo and the net, and speedy Tavares picked up the loose puck past Ekblad and twirled all the way around the other open side of the net with Luongo flat on the ice, and put it in.  Islanders win! What a way to go, Johnny T!  Surely the screaming faithful at the Barclays Center would agree.

Wow.  Way to go, Islanders!  Relief, too,  as Islander fans have been waiting a long time to savour this moment.

Congrats to both teams on a series well played.

Congratulations to the Islanders on moving on to round 2! I don't think many people, myself included, figured they'd be able to knock off the Panthers.

I like their roster but man did I not see Greiss putting up a .944 save percentage and out-playing Luongo.
