This series will have the rare distinction of starting before the first round is officially complete. Kicks off Wednesday at 7pm in Tampa.

The Lightning will have home-ice advantage here despite the fact that the Islanders are a 100-point team and Tampa finished with 97 points. Because NHL!

Wed 4/27, 7pm: NYI @ TBL | NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports
Sat 4/30, 3pm: NYI @ TBL | NBC, Sportsnet, TVA Sports
Tue 5/3, 7pm: TBL @ NYI | NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports
Fri 5/6, 7pm: TBL @ NYI | NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports
*Sun 5/8, TBD:  NYI @ TBL | TBD
*Tue 5/10, TBD:  TBL @ NYI | TBD

Under this format is it possible for the Prez Trophy winner to not have home-ice advantage?

I don't think so - once the teams leave the division series (i.e: Conference Finals, and SC Finals), then home Ice is determined by points.  So the President's Trophy winner is guaranteed home ice for as far as they go.

No. They're guaranteed home-ice for their entire playoff run, and the highest ranked team in the other conference is guaranteed home-ice for at least the first 3 rounds (if they advance that far, obviously). The oddity here is that, in this case, because of the crossover the wildcard team has more points than the division ranked team, and wildcard teams can't get home-ice unless they're facing another wildcard team.

Thanks Busta. I think I'm in favor of the most straightforward seeding system based on points. The regular season ought to really mean something.

The Islanders lost home-ice because they're a Metro wildcard team playing in the Atlantic division bracket, so they immediately slot below the top-3 Atlantic teams on that side regardless of points.

has this ever happened before?  i mean the one second round series starting before the first round is over?  also does anyone know why it's happening?  scheduling conflict?

I read somewhere that it happened in the 70s or 80s once, so definitely very rare. The ANA-NSH series played the traditional once-every-2-days schedule but the problem was theirs was the last series to start and it was one of the few that went 7 games. And I guess they wanted to start the TB-NYI series tonight instead of tomorrow so they could avoid TV-conflicts with the WSH-PIT series.

Thoughts on this hit anyone?

Condra had no idea what planet he was on afterward. No penalty was called. Looks dirty to me I just don't really know what rule it would violate.

Definitely a nasty hit. Could (Should) have been called a boarding penalty.

Islanders 5  Tampa Bay  3.  New York leads series 1 game to 0.

Tampa Bay's Eric Condra certainly didn't see that one coming.  The Islanders Casey Cizikas, part of one of the hard-hitting fourth lines in the league, bashed Condra sidewise, throwing him into the boards as Condra practically flew there to put it another way.  Some would have called it boarding, others a violent hit that left Condra in unstable shape (he left the game and never returned to the ice).  A penalty others would say.  Surely there should be.

No penalty was assessed Cizikas, as many analysts believed it to be a clean, hard hit.  No head shot, no crosscheck, just a hard side-front wise hit that sent the opponent flying into the boards.  Cizikas didn't leave his feet.
So, what was so important about what Casey did?  It certainly changed the tempo of the game and set the tone of it as well.

The Lightning had already taken a one goal lead, but as the Islanders ramped up the hits, it invariably led to goals, as New York scored three, all in the first period.  Lightning netminder Bishop was yanked by telephone time the Isles had built a 4-1 lead in terms second.  Tough the Lightning mounted somewhat of a comeback, it fell short of the mark as Clutterbuck's empty-netter sealed the win for the visitors.  The Islanders goalkeeper Thomas Greiss made 39 saves and was instrumental in keeping his team in the game.

Game 2 is Saturday in Tampa Bay.

Lightning/Hedman 3-0 going into the third. Looks pretty clinchy to me.

As an aside, the more of Matt Martin's game I see, the less I respect it. Basically his job is to concuss as many players as possible within the boundaries of the rules. Do not like.

Very disappointed with the Islanders.  Tough losses both at home in overtime, two games in a row.  Guess that shows how close this series has been.

Tampa  Bay  4  NYIslanders  0.  Lightning win series 4 games to 2.

The Game 5 shutout of the NYIslanders was more of a statement of Tampa Bay's offensive firepower coming to life.  Nothing much that Islanders' netminder Thomas Griess could stop.  Not that he had his best game either.

For the Islanders, banging bodies and hitting posts didn't translate to any luck, all the more frustration especially after two straight OT home losses in Game 3 & 4.  The Lightning, in both games, came from behind to eventually win it in the overtime.

(sigh) Yet another disappointing series loss for Islander fans.

Well done, Lightning.

Close only counts in horse shoes, and, hand grenades!

Better luck next year Brooklyns.

Some good news for the Islanders at least: Hamonic has rescinded his trade request. He said that the trade request was due to a family members health, but that person has since stabilized.
