Ruff to Dallas

Good landing spot for him. He would have helped a few teams methinks.

Dallas is kinda mess right now, isn't it?

Yeah, I think Nieuwendyk was a pretty big failure as a GM. He had some good moves, like the Lehtonen trade, but overall it just didn't seem like he had a direction for the team.

Sorta, they've got some nice pieces, but it seems as if they're stuck in the spot of narrowly missing the playoffs and never getting a top draft pick.

The James Neal trade was pretty bad too.

There was also the horrible Erik Cole for Michael Ryder trade. Niewy traded away the team's leading goal scorer (at the time) for an old player with a bad contract.

While that was a bad trade that obviously didn't work out, Cole is only a year and a half older than Ryder. The age difference in that deal was pretty much immaterial.

Didn't realize Ryder was that old. Seems like Cole's been around for a lot longer.

I think he was badly shafted by the financial state of the team. A number of his moves were compromised or motivated by the team's financial state. A number of them were not true hockey trades yet that is how he's being judged by too many in the media in my opinion. Then when the new ownership took over, they wanted to install their own GM.

I wouldn't count his time in Dallas against him or as a measure of his ability to assess hockey talent. It was a terrible situation to try to acquire and hang on to hockey talent.

From that, I hope he gets another chance.

It's official:

@StarsPR
Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced that Lindy Ruff has been named the 22nd head coach in franchise history

Tom Gaglardi is serious about winning. Him becoming owner was the best thing that could have happened to that team. Jim Nill and Lindy Ruff have great reputations as quality hockey people.

I thought it didn't make sense for Dallas because of their respective contracts.

Hmmmm....so I guess Ruff is over the "no goal" thing?  I guess he never figured Dallas would be the one to come calling all these many years later.
