Series Thread: Edmonton vs San Jose

San Jose  3  Edmonton  2  OT    Sharks lead series 1 game to 0.

The San Jose Sharks were the dominant team outshooting the Oilers 44-19 and in puck possession mode for most of the game.  Even though the Oilers took a 2-0 lead going into the second period on some fluky goals,  the Sharks came to tie it all up and force OT.

Playoff lesson for the young Oilers?  That's certainly what the master Sharks had in mind.

?They had the puck all night,? said Connor McDavid...?When you don?t have the puck you?re not going to get many shots on goal. They did a good job."

Edmonton  1  San Jose 0    Oilers lead series 2 games to 1.

The Edmonton Oilers with two consecutive shutouts of the San Jose Sharks never expected Zach Kassian to be the hero in both games.  Certainly not Oilers fans who were probably dreaming of #97 to create histrionics in this series.  But that's the way playoff hockey is and the Oilers will gladly take it.

Not to mention Cam Talbot, the Oilers' premier netminder doing what he had been consistently doing for this team throughout the regular season -- providing Edmonton with the top-notch goaltending expected of your number one starter.  Talbot continued against the Sharks, backstopping the Oilers to victory and holding the fort as they say.

Oilers  0  Sharks  7    Series tied at 2 games apiece.

The San Jose Sharks had four power play opportunities and they capitalized on every one en route to a 7-O drubbing of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Sharks were simply too much for the Oilers to handle, especially in light of the fact that Edmonton's penalty-killing was at top notch so far in this series shutting down the Sharks' power play.  Luck ran out for the Oilers here in Game 4 culminating in Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl spearing of San Jose's Chris Tenney. Draisaitt received a major penalty along with a misconduct and a potential upcoming suspension.  Terrible game, ugly incident.  That summed up Edmonton's night.

The game camera height above the ice in San Jose is so terrible.

Oilers up 2-0 at the end of the 2nd, hoping to finish off the Sharks.

Oilers 3  Sharks  1    Edmonton wins series 4 games to 2.

Good job, Oilers!  Edmonton will now face Anaheim in the next round.

I didn't pick the Sharks to win anything this year because they had some late season injuries hit with their top players, and their record after the deadline was pretty blah, but this is a bit crazier than I expected:

  • Thornton: torn MCL and ACL in left knee; still played 20 minutes a night at 38 years old, so... what a boss.
  • Hertl: broken foot
  • Marleau: broken thumb
