Series Thread: Pittsburgh vs Columbus

Phil Kessel with a goal and an assist in a Game 1 win over the head coach of the Olympic team that snubbed him. Bet that felt good.

I wonder if Torts will text out during the second round.  ?Just sitting around the house tonight w my dog.  ?Felt like I should be doing something important, but couldn?t put my finger on it.?

Well, the Blue Jackets are down 2-0 and have started gooning it up:

Matt Calvert with a pretty vicious cross check on Tom Kuhnhackl with about 30 seconds left in the game and the puck nowhere around. He turned around and body-checked Kuhnhackl afterward too just for good measure as he hunched over.

Scott Harrington also went cross checked Malkin after the game already ended and the Pens were going to their end to celebrate, that caused a bit of a gathering obviously.

But the Calvert one is obviously what everyone is talking about. Both the cross check and the hit afterward (which was technically a head shot) should be suspendable offences. Can't wait to see how the NHL screws this up.

Things could certainly change, but the sense right now is that Calvert may avoid a suspension. Perhaps get fined.

Jesus Christ. I knew that whatever they ended up suspending him for wouldn't have been enough, but this is basically saying "job well done". If he doesn't get suspended that play will be used in promotional materials for the next few years for sure.

If he doesn't get 10 games, that's an absolute joke. That's not a hockey play in any shape or form. It's assault.

I don't think he'll get 10 playoff games, mostly because it doesn't seem that he hurt Kunhhackl much...agree or disagree with them dolling out suspensions based on this, it seems to be a factor in the decision of the severity of the punishment.

I do think he gets a game or 2 for it though.

If I was in charge, he'd get 10.  They weren't battling over a puck, and the fact that he went back at him after breaking his stick over him was pretty rough.  Like you say, it was like an assault.

Does anyone know what happened, if anything, to elicit this kind of stuff from Calvert?

mirtle: NHL suspends Calvert one game for his cross check on Kuhnhackl. That'll learn him.

Still basically a slap on the wrist. Just a slightly harder one.

Ridiculous. Deliberate attempt to injure. But, since he wasn't carried off the ice, no big deal.

Sore-loser Calvert.  If the Blue Jackets are to make a dent in this playoff series against the Penguins, they'll need goals  and a better Bobrovsky, not elbows & fists.

This somehow ended up in the wrong thread earlier, not sure where else to put it but here:

Penguins 3  Blue Jackets  5    Pittsburgh leads series 3 games to 1.

For the Columbus Blue Jackets it ain't over yet.  They managed to hold onto their lead right to the end and thereby staving off elimination here in Columbus.
Coach Tortorella wanted his team to just go out and win come hell or high water, and they did with their backs to the wall so to speak, the Blue Jackets took a lead they never relinguished though the Penguins did score with just 37 seconds remaining in the game.

Topical!

To be fair, they were the 4th best team in the NHL and got to play the 3rd best team in the first round. This playoff system is messed up.
