Sharp to Dallas

DallasStars: ICYMI on Periscope: #Stars acquire Patrick Sharp and Steven Johns from @NHLBlackhawks in exchange for Ryan Garbutt and Trevor Daley

That's a pretty serious cap dump type move. Daley's a good defenceman coming off a career year, but he'll be 33 mid-season. Garbutt's a 30 y/o 3rd/4th liner. Basically, they turned Sharp into 2 players and $800K of cap space, while throwing in a pretty decent looking prospect.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Greetings from the cottage: Stars retained 50 percent of Garbutt cap hit/salary so Hawks get him at 900k. Huge key to the Sharp trade...

Okay, so make that $1,7M in cap space.

Not that it needs re-enforcement or anything but this deal is another pretty good sign that getting teams to take on questionable salary this off-season is a tall order.

Doesn't that still only leave them with about 900K in overall cap space however.  They still have Oduya, Roszival and Kruger from last years team without a contract.  That cap space is with a 13-forward, 6 defenseman, 2 goaltender roster too.

There must be a part II coming on the heels of this trade. Dallas needs D.

They've got a bunch of 22-23 year old prospects who will probably make the jump from part timers to full time NHLers next year so probably not so much.

I have to figure that they're not bringing back at least one of Oduya and Roszival.

Unless Roszival takes like a league minimum type contract I don't see him coming back. He wasn't all that effective for them either. Oduya is the interesting one. By all accounts he's turned down some pretty big offers already this summer in the hopes of returning to Chicago once they traded either Sharp or Bickell. Well now Sharp's gone but they've taken on a bunch of  salary there too and picked up another decent defenceman. That could signal the end for Oduya. Wonder if those contracts are still on the table or if he'll have to take a hit on them.

They've got cap space too and there's still some pretty decent defencemen available on the market (Franson, Ehrhoff, Oduya, Visnovsky if he can stay healthy).
