SHOULD THE LEAFS BE ACTIVE IN FREE AGENCY?

vogon.jpg

Ah freddled free agent,
Glennie, Stalberg, Parenteau
Thy micturations are to me,
As plurdled gabbleblotchits,
On a lurgid bee,
That mordiously Briere hath blurted out,
Its earted Hodgson jurtles,
Into a rancid festering confectious Franson squealer!

Some decent ideas, I think.

I trust you think resigning Franson to a hyper inflated  one year contract with the promise of rental glory is not among them.

One thing we've seen over the history of free agency is that, unless they feel they'll have a chance to win a championship, players will almost always choose the long-term deal that offers them security over an inflated one year deal.

That has got to be the third worst poetry I have ever heard.

We had Franson plus turn into a 1st so anything is possible.

All joking aside, I think Hodgson represents just about the idea situation for the team this year.  Low risk reclamation project who, if he plays well, represents value and, if he doesn't, makes little difference.  Playing for a great coach on a young team with few expectations should be a match made in heaven for him.

Here's how you all will see what the Leafs plan is. After tomorrow (or a day or two later) if the Leafs are in on a few of the better agents, the I think the Leafs brass and Babcock will be planning a different route on a retool with the drive for a playoff push. The Leafs have technically loaded up with picks and prospects within the last 2 years.

The Leafs can continue to rebuild.....while making playoff pushes. The two are not exclusive to one another.

If the Leafs stay away from free agency, then the tank is on and expect a good portion of the core to be dealt before the season begins or at the deadline for Kessel and Phaneuf.

The Leafs have to move just 4 players as I see it. Kessel, Phaneuf, Bozak and Lupul. That frees up a ton of cash and at the deadline, this seasons salaries will be cut in more than half.

In MY opinion, the Leafs should stay as far away from free agency this year and go all in for Stamkos next year. We will have a lot of our top prospects starting to show signs by then, plus what we have now.

Yes of course they should.  Gotta ice a team and who knows, might find some diamonds in the rough that can be dealt for pics later on.  Maybe a long shot or two like Hodgson or Gagner

Those two things are basically the definition of being mutually exclusive. It's why the ridiculous word "retool" was coined by Burke and which you yourself feel compelled to use. The team needs top of the league talent. You don't add that in the middle of the draft. You can't gameplan around superstars being available in free agency.

We saw this with Burke. We saw it with JFJ. You can't "build while competing" and have it result in anything other than a disaster.
