i guess i will toss this back into the mix.  i think he is still working on a big move even though he said he is done for now. i think he is still shopping for the big impact centerman.

I hope your are right. Mentioned in another thread think that is reason Schenn not signed yet. When we trade for 1C lot of bodies go the other way then BB signs Schenn to long term deal.

i think just like the Phaneuf deal we wont see it comming, when he brings in a big time center.
But you just said you do see it coming...  :P

Yes i do think he is looking, but again if and when he does make a deal we won't see it comming ( meaning  the players involved).

Brian Burke confidently taking heat

What word would Burke bring to a table full of critics who want him to explain why he has been too quiet for their liking on the trade and free agent markets this summer?

"One word: Dion," he replies.

Further defined, Dion is Dion Phaneuf, the Leafs' captain and defenseman, who was acquired late in 2009-10 by Burke from Calgary.

"We're 45-36-11 since the trade in games he has dressed," Burke says.
Granted, Phaneuf has yet to help the Maple Leafs reach the playoffs. Toronto has missed the postseason for six straight years, in fact. But here's a word:

Patience.

Burke showed smart restraint this summer by not caving in to the desires of rabid Leafs fans and demanding media for a big, knee-jerk trade or signing. Not that the blustery GM has ever been shy about making moves, but this year's free-agent crop was nothing to get too excited about.
...
Now the hockey 24/7 crowd in Hogtown wants Burke to tender some ridiculous offer sheet to Steven Stamkos or pull some desperate trade with Colorado for Paul Stastny. Neither will happen, and -- breathe now, Toronto, breathe -- that's OK for the Leafs.
....
With James Reimer signed to a nice new three-year contract worth $5.4 million after his promising rookie season (20-10-5, 2.60 GAA, .921 save pct.), Toronto looks good again in what has been its biggest problem area in recent years -- goaltending.

Yes, the Leafs could use another marquee-type scorer, but who couldn't? Otherwise, this is a younger team that is gradually getting there. Shortcuts via free agency rarely work in hockey. There are many more examples of big signings that have blown up in GMs' faces (Bobby Holik, anyone?).

Burke is a man who loves action, but as he relaxed on a summer day in early July, he sounded perfectly content with his team's relative inaction.

"We believe in this group," he said.

In a word, Brian Burke's attitude can be summed up as confident.

I think he's done until people either start walking away from arbitration decisions or someone makes an offer on Komi to meet the cap floor...wait, maybe I meant hope instead of think...

We didn't see the Phaneuf trade coming because it came mid-season.

It's very possible that Burke really is done for now.  I think we may a few minor moves before the season and then he may do as he has done in the past: observe the team during the 1st half of the season and then make a splash in the 2nd.

Burke's Trade History between now and the month or so before the trade deadline:

2009-10

July 27, 2009  Leafs acquire Wayne Primeau and a 2nd round pick in 2011 from Calgary for Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and a 7th round pick in 2012.

August 10, 2009  Leafs trade Justin Pogge to the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional draft pick in 2011.

September 18, 2009  Leafs obtain Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins for the Leafs 2010 First and Second round picks and the Leafs 2011 first round pick.

December 3, 2009 Acquired Philippe Paradis from Carolina in exchange for Jiri Tlusty.

2010-11

August 27, 2010  Leafs acquire defenceman Matt Lashoff from the Tampa Bay Lightning for forwards Alex Berry and Sefano Giliati.

Aside from depth/prospects, 4th line or 3rd pairing players, the Kessel deal is the only trade of note between this time of year and the start of a season. Historically with the Leafs, not a lot has on with Burke and trades at this time of year.

The thing with Burke though is that he can pull off deal at any time because he's so driven and loves to do deals. Under pressure to contend for a playoff spot, I think he senses the need more than previous years.

So I do think the Leafs still want a center and if I had to bet on it (not guarantee it), they'll trade for a youngish (under 30), checking center before the season starts.

What 'big impact centerman' are available? Lecavalier?

I was hoping that the major trade would be something like Stastny not wanting to be in Colorado and sending Grabovski + the amazing Komisarek to them to help them with their Cap issues. Throw in a top prospect who hasn't played in the NHL yet and we got a deal.

Then flip MacArthur and Blacker + ?? for Parise.

Ok...ok...I don't know what Burke will/should do or even how.  I was just hoping the Leafs lineup would look something like:

Kulemin / Stastny / Kessel

Parise / Connolly / Lupul

Kadri / Bozak / Armstrong

Caputi / Colborne / Brown

Fight night 4th line:

Brown / Boyce(Ziggy) / Orr

Colborne would be groomed for the 2nd Center spot in 3 years after Connolly's contract runs out, Frattin should then be ready to replace Lupul and Biggs should be close to replacing Armstrong.

On D, with Komisarek gone and Franson in, next summer Gardiner might be ready to replace Liles.

After that have the new kids competing with the team for a spot.

Does that answer the 4th line center question or was that an Armchair GM 2011/12 answer?

You are missing Stamkos, Nash and Bobby Ryan.
