Suggestions for BBQ

1) Gas or Coal? (any difference in taste??)
2) Portable or stationary?

I am thinking portable since I can store it more efficiently in the Winter. Probably take it easily to picnics and trips. Though, would a portable bbq work better with gas or coal?

Coal for taste though I find it to be a pain in the butt. A few years ago I got a Napoleon which I had hooked up to the gas in my house and I'm thrilled I did that. I never run out of gas and can do low and slow stuff... Like 14+ hr low and slow.  8)

I prefer gas/propane myself. If I want the added flavor of hardwood, then I can add some soaked wood chips to give the food a bit of smoke and cook over indirect heat.

Any trade off other than size if I go for a portable gas/proprane?

Generally, the portable ones pump out fewer BTUs than a similarly-priced non-portable one. The grill won't get as hot and it will take longer to cook / won't be able to sear as well.

Also, the portable ones are sometimes designed to work with smaller propane tanks and may need an adapter hose to connect it to one of the big tanks. Just something to look in to.
