The Force Awakens (Spoilers)

You know what's great about London...having your call schedule changed at the last minute and then checking online to see that you can grab a bunch of tickets to Star Wars at 10:30PM for the opening night.

It was good.  I enjoyed it anyway.  Nothing groundbreaking and easily an improvement on the prequels.

Did it clear that 'high bar' with aplomb?
How would you rank the Episodes from top to bottom (which usually inversely correlates to Lucas' level of involvement)?

I get the sense I'll be feeling like this a lot this week(warning, nsfw language):

I obviously have alot to say about this movie - but I'll get to that in a later post...

So mild spoilers and such - if you don't want to read this move along...

Was any one else reminded of this scene during Han's smuggling sequence?

I'll say this much, one of my favourite bits of business in The Force Awakens, and it isn't a spoiler, are the lines "That sounds very scary... you must be so brave". If you've seen it, you'll know, if you haven't, you'll love it.

Movie like this I thought we could have a safe-space to talk about spoilers. Anyway, I was never a massive Star Wars fans. I'd only seen the movies once, re-watched them with a friend whose a big fan before seeing the new one. I actually liked Force Awakens better than the rest. Goes Force - Empire - Jedi - Hope to me. But again I didn't have the big emotional attachment to the originals as others might.

Going into the movie I expected to like it but notice a bunch of stupid things that characters did or decisions that the filmmakers made and that stuff would get in the way of me really liking it. And while that stuff was definitely there the rest of the movie was just so fun that I didn't care.

I think I would call myself a fan.  I'm not a guy who can tell you the name of every single Ewok but I definitely have an attachment to the films.  The prequels pretty much ruined my thoughts on the prequels simply because it really messed with a lot of the backstory stuff along with the horrible CGI edits.

I thought this was easily one of the best for me.  There were things I didn't care for but overall it was just a fun movie and it was in the Star Wars universe.  I think for me I put it behind A New Hope but ahead of Return of the Jedi.

A New Hope, or just Star Wars, as we called it back in 1977 when we saw it 75 times between May and October, remains #1 in my heart. Force Awakens #2, Empire #3, Return of the Jedi#4 and I refuse to acknowledge the other three......

I really liked the original series.  I wouldn't say I was a fanatic, but I enjoyed them and watched them multiple times.  Then the prequels came out and totally ruined the entire series for me.  I haven't bothered watching the new one yet, not even up for it.  The prequels were so bad.  It's kinda like the original series was the 93-94 Leafs and the prequels were the 82-83 Leafs.

Those of you who actually have known me over the years here probably know I'm a star wars 'super' fan I suppose.

Now I understand why people don't like the prequels,  I myself enjoy the story. It has its problems, horrible acting,  bad dialogue,  but I actually like the story. I do. And I don't have to defend it,  it's my personal taste,  I'm not here to convince anyone. Honestly with some better acting and stronger direction those prequels could have been extraordinary.

Anyway,  that being said,  this new movie I found was fine. It's another star wars movie and it fits it OK. I guess I've read too many continuity novels so the changes in the post rotj world kinda threw me off.

So anyway,  what's my point here? Well I'm finding it really funny how many people online (forums and such) are complaining that this is just a remake/reboot of the original star wars.

Yet back in 99 most were saying that these new movies were nothing like star wars.

Say what you will about the prequels,  but there was a story being told there. It wasn't a cash grab to make more money,  there was a level of experimentation going on that,  I guess most would believe failed, but it was a risk.

So along comes this movie,  basically rehashes the formula of the old ones and is seen as negative? I don't even understand what people want anymore.

That being said I will say this...  The 'tortured' portrayal of kylo ren, that's kinda what I was hoping to see with anakin. And there's a lot more going on under the surface of this movie. I think there's a whole subplot about a vacuum in the force,  which was a really interesting concept that was the focus of the game Knights of the old Republic sith lords. When a jedi choses to stop listening to the force. Which may be what Luke did...

Anyway ramblings aside the one thing that I don't get out of this movie is the motivation of the first order. What do they want? Just to be a bad ass group that rules the Galaxy? That's the difference with the prequels,  I get the manipulation and the reordering of power to birth the Empire. Here? It's bad ass stormtroopers and a new leader? I'm hoping this makes more sense in the next 2...

Anyway I'm sure I have more to say,  and I'd probably generate more discussion on a sw board but I don't have the patience for those guys.

I feel the same way about the prequels. I even see little difference between Jar Jar and C-3PO. I do, after only 2 viewings, prefer the Force Awakens to any of the prequels.

My impression of the First Order is that they're basically what's left of the Empire so the drive is basically just a continuation of what the Empire was driving to do. The biggest related question in my mind is, who the hell is Snoke? Is he some Sith, or Palpatine's brother or something?  I'm sure there is a lot to be learned in the next two films. After all, we knew even less of Papatine after A New Hope.

Another big question, will Episode 8 start on a ice planet? And will there be a Yeti?

Here's a theory on Snoke: http://comicbook.com/2015/12/26/star-wars-the-force-awakens-soundtrack-might-provide-hint-at-sup/

There's a theory that snoke is the Darth plagueis that Palpatine brought up in rots.

Also,  what I found interesting is that Abrams has said that ren nor snoke are sith... They are dark force users... Anyway. I really think the next 2 movies have the potential to be very interesting.

For sure, lots of questions to be answered.

I do think that Rey's use of the force is going to be explained.  I'm hoping she isn't Luke's daughter but I think she might have trained with him.

It was really nice to see Harrison Ford care.  He seemed like he was enjoying himself in the movie.  He's also confirmed to be back for the next movie too.

Rey's sudden ability with the force is due to some kind of trigger. That's what the title is referencing and Snoke and Kylo mention it too.

I doubt she trained with Luke, but I agree it seems likely that she is Luke's daughter. Or grand-daughter?

I feel like that's the most obvious explanation. She likely trained with Luke at his school when Ren was there. Maybe she was the only survivor and Luke flew her off to Jakku to hide her and used the Force to obscure her memories to keep her safe. That would at least explain why she was so good at using it basically right away.

Hiding her on a desert planet is a Star Wars move for sure. And Max von Sydow plays the role Kenobi did for Luke, the secret protector.
