True story...  We just moved to Cambridge about 4 yrs ago.  Before that, we were in Guelph - pretty close to downtown.

Sooo one night (2am) I woke to hear a crackling sound.  It was loud, and close.  I woke my wife right away.  I jumped up and looked out our front bedroom window and saw nothing.  I ran to the back son's bedroom, and that's when I saw major flames coming out of a house 3 doors down.

I threw on shorts and a shirt and ran to the house on fire.  It was a crack-house apartment (a house with about 5 seperate units).  Myself and my neighbour got there at the exact same time, and I kicked in the back door.  Neighbour and I ran in (pretty thick smoke) and banged hard and shouted at each of the units.  We got everyone out.  1 dog and 1 cat were the only casualties.

Turned out it was arson.  Neighbour and I had to give statements.  That was it, no fanfare, no thanks, nobody cared.  We both totally risked our lives and only those of our neighbours that were out on the street knew what we did.  Because several apts were crack houses, nobody cared what we did.

But would I do it again?  Absolutely...

Unless there were children in there, I wouldn't have bothered.

However, kudos to you for caring. Not everyone would have done it.

Thanks, except 9 out of 10 people on this board would have done the same thing.  It was all timing and adrenaline.

Kudos to the coach for having the courage to put the kid in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZJhfP50bxE

Autistic kid who volunteered as an assistant on the team gets put in a game, and puts up 20 points!

My sympathies to you having moved to Cambridge.  ;)

I'd like to thank the more astute posters around here for helping me maintain some semblance of proper grammar, and helping me maintain a decent vocabulary in this world of txt msg short form.

Thx.

To my colleague who offered to switch his Christmas Eve shift with my Christmas Day shift so I could spend the day with my family (his children are grown.)

Now, that would normally be worth a bottle of something I think but the dude doesn't drink... any suggestions?

Can't go wrong with one of those Hickory Farms gift baskets, or a gift card of some sort.

depending on how much you want to spend, any one of:

Fancy coffee mug/gift set from Starbucks or Timothy's (Not Horton!), Christmas flavoured coffee perhaps. Or teas, if he's not a coffee drinker.

Fruit/cheese/goodies assortment basket (dunno where you are but) most Loblaw company grocery stores will make one up for you with your requests, if the ready made ones don't suit. Even better, grab a few things yourself, an inexpensive basket from the local dollar or party supplies store, and make one up yourself.

A really nice poinsettia, or even better, an evergreens arrangement.

A small assortment of Christmas cookies from the bakery. (or your own, if you bake)

If that's too much, even a grocery store or nice restaurant gift card.
