The Soshnikov

The guy needs his own thread.

Whenever he has the puck it makes me tingle.

Most exciting player since Phil Kessel...but he's better.

For the record there already is a well known Russian athlete with the nickname of AK-47. It's former NBA All-Star Andrei Kirilenko. See, he got the nickname because his initials are AK and he wore the number 47. He was never the best shooter but it still fit his style of play as he was a very quick and agile and the namesake Rifle certainly isn't most known for accuracy. It certainly isn't something that, say, a sniper would use.

So you see how the nickname wasn't, you know, forced?

At the same age, Kessel had two 30+ goal seasons under his belt and has 5 (6 if you include the lockout year) 30 goal seasons already. I'm excited by Soshnikov, but we should probably rein in the expectations.

I'm going to take that as a personal insult over my dubbing Luke Schenn "Lockdown."

You probably should ;)

I don't see how you can keep Sosh off the team next year.  I think unless he has a absolutely terrible camp, he HAS to be on the opening night roster, right?

So somebody tweeted a Babcock quote last night to the effect that Soshnikov and Hyman weren't going anywhere because they are fast and good.  Did he say that?

If he did, I think we have no choice but to conclude that he thinks Nylander is a bust.

The Belfast Giants have a player called Adam Keefe (Sheldon's brother as it happens). He wears shirt number 47.

Nobody calls him AK47 though. Maybe cos it's we have a bit of a history here with guns and stuff.

I wear my ignorance as a badge of honor.

Also for the record I was kidding. Parsing Babcocks every word -- or what he doesn't say -- makes folks seem like a bunch of Kremlinologists.

Thanks for the enlightement as always Nikos, didn't ever hear about this dude but then again I hardly watch NBA.  I would think the "nikov" sort of warrants a non forced AK -41 reference. Also he does hit all over the place not unlike a real AK-47

If you believe Kirilenko, he didn't choose the number with that intention. I remember reading a SI(I think) interview with him where he was asked about the nickname and he said something like "Americans love guns, I guess".

-nikov is not an uncommon suffix for Soviet/Slavic last names, Shoshnikov does not have the initials A or K, and people generally don't refer to an AK-47 as a Kalashnikov. So, yeah, it's pretty forced. Extremely, even.
