Tom Renney's time as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers appears to be done after two seasons.

According to a team tweet, Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini has announced the club will not renew Renney's contract.

DarrenDreger: The Oilers took their time deciding on making this coaching change and are in no rush to hire Tom Renney's replacement.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Re: Renney parting ways with Oil. Always thought he had good eye for talent. A team would be smart to hire him as dir of player personnel

Welcome to the Leafs' front office, Tom. :P

I'm wondering if Wilson might be a candidate with his run and gun.

When I read this, the first image that popped into my mind was Wilson throwing RHN, Eberle, and Hall under a bus.

Not a surprising development to me. The longer it went on, the less likely they would retain him. I'm not sure why it took as long as it did. Maybe because GM Steve Tambellini was at the WCs and his contract is up for renewal.

I don't think it's a bad thing for youngsters to experience a couple of NHL coaches. I'd guess that they'd learn more.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Todd Nelson/Derek Laxdal will get mentions as candidates for EDM job, and rightfully so, BUT new guy will have NHL coaching experience.

Which takes Laxdal off the list if NHL coaching experience is a requirement. Nelson and Eakins have 2 yrs as NHL assistants. I don't know if McKenzie's statement implies the candidate must have NHL experience as a head coach ...

I don't see it as a difficult issue. There are a bunch of capable candidates out there as we saw when we reviewed names to replace Wilson.

I think the way McKenzie put the statement together does imply NHL head coaching experience will be a requirement, in which case Eakins and Nelson are out.
