Toronto Transit

Looks like I might be having 6 weeks of daily treatment at Western Hospital on Bathurst.

Living in Cambridge, I'd likely take the GO train from Kitchener at 7:07am and get off at Bloor Station.  Then I think it's 2 buses to get to the hospital.  Coming home, I'd GO Bus it from Union to Kitchener.

Question:  I'd be taking 2 TTC buses in am, and 2 in pm.  What's the TTC policy on bus transfers??  Anyone use the TTC on a regular basis?

Be sure to get a transfer ticket when you get on the TTC and you can do as many transfers as it takes to get where you're going.  Best of luck.

Get your transfer where you pay your fare. It's good for the duration of your trip, regardless of how many vehicles you take.

Cash fare for TTC is $3. According to their web site adult monthly pass is $128.50 and a weekly pass is $38.50.

Roughly speaking if you use the TTC twice a day, five days a week, a monthly pass is most economical (and also more convenient than having to find change every time you get on).  Any less than that and you're better off getting tokens.  Also monthly passes are only good for a particular month (e.g. June) and not, unfortunately, for the particular 30 days after you purchase, so buy accordingly.  But like others said, one fare is good for the duration of your trip in a single direction.

Also, if you're travelling in rush hour I'd avoid the east-west streetcars on King and Queen if you can, as they are sometimes a bit erratic. The College, Spadina, and Bathurst streetcars are pretty reliable anytime.  The Subway and most buses are generally fine as well.  Outside rush hour, pretty well any route is fine barring mechanical problems.  Always leave yourself a bit of extra time in any case.

Thanks!

I got this message on Facebook from a friend.  Does it make sense?:

The most direct route: GO train to Union. Then subway north to St. Patrick Stn. Then Dundas streetcar west to Bathurst. Leaves you right in front of the hospital.  Patrick is on the University line. It's at University and Dundas. As far west as you can get, so it'll be the shortest streetcar ride from there.

And I assume you don't get a free transfer from GO to TTC?  I have to pay the $3 TTC fare each time?

The GO train ticket plus TTC fare is going to run you close to $400 per month at that rate. I think it's $15 one way from Kitchener.  I take it from Georgetown and it's $8 one way at half the distance.

Can you get a ride to Milton? There are way more trains running, it takes half the time vs. from Kitchener and probably cost you half as much.  You can get off at Kipling, take the subway to Dundas West and I think catch a streetcar down Dundas to the hospital at Dundas & Bathurst.

Yeah, I was going to say that's the best way to go.

Also, if you're ever down there around lunchtime you'd be only a couple of blocks from Porchetta and Co. which is just at Dundas and Palmerston and which does, to my mind, some of the best sandwiches in the city.

We were budgeting roughly $500 for monthly travel for this treatment.  Sounds like we can come in under budget...

I'll look into the Milton option!  Thanks!

That GO Bus from Union to Kitchener is a transfer at Square One in Mississauga. And, as others have mentioned, it stops in Cambridge before it gets to Kitchener.

If you opt for the Milton route, there's an easier route than the one already mentioned.

Take the train or bus right to Union Station, University line to St. Patrick, westbound streetcar. Or if you're up for a short walk, schlep up to Dundas and take the streetcar to Bathurst.

Graycoach has several trips daily from Cambridge and drops you off steps from the Dundas streetcar.

Yet another option is taking GO to Long Branch and hopping on the Queen Streetcar, getting out and Bathurst and walking one block north.

Stop the presses! And the interwebs!

(crosspost from FB but want Rick to see this)

I got it - the easiest route from Cambridge to Toronto Western! Take GO to the Bloor station, then walk 300 metres to Dundas West TTC station and hop on the 505 streetcar. It's only one transfer, a chance to stretch your feet, and drops you right off at hospital. I promise to meet up one day and take you to some of my favourite places in the old hood.

Thanks - replied on FB ;)

Is the ultimate destination close to Ontario Place?  My friend and I recently plotted a course that starts from Markham to Liberty Village.  Basically take the GO to Union, and hop on the Lakeshore West line for one stop where you get off at Exhibition Stadium.  This way you can save on the 2 TTC tokens if you don't mind a short walk.

I can't seem to find when the last Go bus lesves Union each evening and arrives Camnridge or Kitchener...  Anyone?

It looks like the bus doesn't go there in the evening, at least not direct from Union.
