Training camp officially opens in just a few days. Players will report for medicals on Thursday and on-ice sessions will begin on Friday. The first weekend of camp takes place in Niagara Falls and a lot of it will be open to the public, if anyone was interested in checking things out: https://www.nhl.com/mapleleafs/info/training-camp

While this isn't a confirmation, it also wouldn't exactly be surprising to see things start out that way. Assuming Gardiner stays with Zaitsev that leaves Dermott's partner and the #7 and potentially #8 spot open. Carrick, Borgman, Rosen, Marincin, Ozhiganov and Holl are all options there.
At forward Babcock announced in July that he expected Marleau to play with Matthews and Nylander (who is of course without a contract ATM) and Hyman to play with Tavares and Marner. With the exception of Kadri at 3C the entire bottom-6 seems up for grabs with Johnsson, Leivo, and Ennis battling for 2 LW spots, Lindholm, Gauthier, and Cracknell (Dubas mentioned him by name last week) battling for 4C spot, and Kapanen and Brown battling for who plays on the 3rd and 4th line.
Between the pipes Freddy obviously comes in as the starter but the back-up position is wide open with McBackup, Sparks, and Pickard all realistic options.
Also, don't forget, John Tavares is a Maple Leaf.
